If but 50 per cent, of our people
were enough interested in government
to go to the polls in our last national
election, may it not be due in large
measure to the fact that leadersh : p
is grasped by men of babbling tongues
rather than by those of functioning
brains? It was not always so in
America. It has nr/ver been so much
so as today. And it is due to one of
two reasons—to the inability of the
leaders to think, or to a moral cow
ardice which persuades them to con
ceal their thoughts.
Men are seeking the Presidential
nomination—as leaders if you please
—who, on vital issues, positively re
fuse to lead or to even think aloud.
This means an utter lack of essential
qualities; for if they have no idea*
, ox plana they Jtro. not fiW aod if thay, .
have ideas they daps not:! uttaE^lhap- -s’
are unfit. They lack either the men
tal capacity or the moral qualities for
which the mass . of the people are
waiting—and thus far in vain.
Little wonder that 50 per cent, of
the people are too cynical or indiffeV-
ent to vote when the issues that vital
ly concern millions, the success of
our institutions and the good of *o-
city ant utterly ignored by the very
men who aspire to the leadership of
the Nation.
I^t the candidates remove their
mufflers and their rubber heels, and
like statesmen of the days when
statesmen were leaders and thinkers
speak out and tell us where they
stand on the Farm problem, Prohibi
tion, Immigration, Flood Rolief, Tariff,
etc., etc., etc.
Then will the P|pidential campaign
mean a real debate to which the pub
lie interest will respond.
Allendale "Tax Levy
Shows Big Increase
Allendale, Nov. 1.—There has been
a decided increase in the tax levy of
every school district ' in Allendale
County over the tax levy of last year,
according to thci annual report made
by J. Stoney Sanders, county auditor.
In the school districts of Allendale,
Appleton, Baldoc, Beech Bf&nch
Bennett Springs, Bull Pond, Cave,
Riverside, Seigling, Lawton, Syca
more and Ulmers—those districts
making up the Allendale Centralized
High School District, an extra levy
os six mills has been added in every
district.
In the school districts of Brunson.
Harmony, Kline, Fairfax, Union.
Sand Hill and Shady Grove, a 3 3-4
l«vy has been added to each district.
Fairfax district bears the greatest
burden of all, with an additional levy
of 29 3-4 mills over that of last year.
This, of course, is due to the hand
some new school building which Fair
fax has recently completed.

Sooner or later national organiza
tions will lewrn that a real grievance
or issue cannot be brushed aside. F »r
a fact it is almost an impossibility—
because sooner or later it will assert
itaelf here or there—and maybe in a
new dress not quite as mild a* in its
original form. All of this has to do
the action- of the
ing a place on its convention program
for a discussion of the farm problems.
It was hardly a wise decisiqn.
. There is no more vital or impor
tant question before the ^nation to
day than our farm problem—and of a
financial nature too. Millions of
people art involved—representing not
only a basic industry—but the most
has ic industry.
What if the spokesmen of the
banker group interested in agricul
tural relief had submitted a few un
>
sound theories or unjust attacks upon
the bankers? Isn’t it always better
to destroy such reasoning in the arena
of open debate than to give them ex
tended life by refusing a hearing?
Over the long haul the Bankers will
find that through talking things over
with the farmer they will icome to
understand each other better.
