Acting upon information furnished
Ijim, R. M. Belger, of this city, re
covered his Chevrolet coupe Saturday.'
The car, which was stolen about two
months'ago from the garage of the
Causey-Youmans -Chevrolet Co„ of
Barnwell, was found in Aiken in the
possession of William Chavous, col
ored, who was arrested and brought
back to this city charged with the
theft. He is being held in the Barn
well County jail pending his trial.
Chavous, it is said,'had altered the
motor and body numberS.r)n the coupe
and had also dyed the upholstery a
d<i?p blue. It is understood that he
admitted stealing the car, but con
tends that the garage w’ag open at the
time and that he did not break in.
H estated to Sheriff Dyches, it is
alleged, that he rolled the car out of
the garage and pushed it down Tur
key Creek hill before starting tha
motor. » .
The original number on the motor
fiad been filed off and a new number
cut with steel dies. The serial num
ber on the body had also been altered.
Chavous has worked here as a brick
mason off and on 'for several years
and at one time enjoyed a very good
reputation. It is understood that lie
will be. charged with breaking "Into
the garage as well as stealing the
automobile, and should he be convict

chain gang or in the penitentiary
awaits him.
The car had been driven about
2,000 miles while in the negro’s pos
session. •
