Augusta Advertises
Its Cotton Exchange
Augusta, Ga., Sept. 12.—The mem
bers of the Augusta Cotton Exchange,
including the bankers, fertilizer con
cerns, cotton a|pd oil mills amd other
business interests as well as the cot
ton, factors, cotton merchants, export
ers fr.d buyers, are interested in pro-,
moting Augusta as a big cotton mar-,
ket, believing that it will react favor
ably fo every interest in the entire
Augusta district, including the small
towns of the section. They are not
only urging farmers to study the mar
keting situation, but they recommend
that cotton be stored carefully to pre
vent weather damage and that insur
ance he taken bo cover the valuable
product, as every now and then some
farmer loses ' considerable cotton
through negligence on this score and
weather damage is general when hold
ing movements are extensive.
The advancing tendency of cotton,
together with the prospects of still
higher prices, is causing many fanners
to hold to the fleecy stanle, and in
order to asist materially in this work
every preparation has been made by
the Augusta Cotton Exchange mem
bers toll assist fanners in any under
taking along this Hne they may have
in mind by providing liberal advances
on cotton, low storage, interest and
insurance rates, making it -pqssible
to carry cotton for an indefinite period
at a nominal cost
The Augusta Cotton Exchange re-
Govfcrnment that they don’t want any
more reclamation work done, no
more irrigation ’canals, no more land
drained or deserts irrigated until the
price of farm products increases.
Thosfc are the farmers that have
voted to keep out the first-class
European immigration that this
country needs, the immigration that
would provide mouths to eat all the
fanners can grow and more. They
vote to keep out customers for the
farms, and Vould vote to prevent
development of the country. But
they will not prevent it
* No extensive development began
now would have any effect or add
one acre to cultivatable land In lew
than ten to fifteen years. By that
time, in the natural course of events,
the population df the country will
increase by twenty millions.
The farmers, more than any other
class, are interested in canal develop
ment, which would take, as Mr.
'Hoover has shown, from -eix to
twelve cents a bushel from the
freight charge of export wheat, and
increase the price oi American
wheat by that amount per -bushel

That’s good news, but it would be
better to wipe out hydrophobia as the
British have done. Every dog is
kept in quarantine for a necessary

Mr. Will C. Wood, California’s
superintendent of Public Instruction,
says that school hours should be
made longer, and recommends legis
lation-to the effect. He is-mistaken,
the hours should be made shorter if
there is to be any change.
Two hours a day, or three at the
most, a child properly taught could
learn all that its mind could absorb
in one day. No hours of sunlight
should be spent indoors unnecessarily.
For centuries men quarreled aljout
the nature' of the soul. W'^s h com
posed of solid matter or was it pure
ly spiritual? Now science shews that
there is no such thing as solid mat
ter, every atom being only an aggre
gation of electrons and nuclei, tiny
positive and negative charges of elec
tricity. And we don’t’ know what
electricity IS. *
Parchnieftt manuscripts, J written
*with Latin characters in ancient Ara
maic, spoken by Jews in the time of
Christ, found in Pompeii, have been
translated. They contain slighting
references to early Christians. It is
hard for prosperous Christians of
1927 to realize that ancient pros
perity looked upon early Christians as
we look upon the Russian Bolsheviks.
