Pumice Duponts Due
v fo Volcanic Activity
Nebraska possesses extraordinary
deposit^ of pumice. Virtually the
whole stat^rjs overlaid by natnral de
posits of this substance, in all stages
of consolidation, from fairly solid rock
to the finest dust
Pumice Is a volcanic product, and
its presence In such large Quantities
la Nebraska and some adjoining states
is taken to be evidence of former vol
canic activity in that region. It is
produced by the rapid expansion of,
gases in lavs, due to sudden release of
pressure, .which either forms s very
light, porous rock or may completely
shatter the lava into dust, in which
state it may be transported great dis
tances by wind and deposited in drifts.
In the western portion of Nebraska
there are impure masses of it, prob
ably deposited in this way, 100 feet or
more in depth. Nearly all the pumice
or the volcanic ash used in the United
States is made into polishing powder
or incorporated in abrasive soap.
Other uses are the manufacture of
semi-fused filling brick or mineral
wool or cement £nd of a cheap kind
of glass.

you should not put off a trip to our shop and installation of needed
equipment. Maybe the miss in that engine of yours is caused
by nothing more than a cracked spark plug. It pays to search
for “cau?e” when your auto does not function properly.
We have a complete line of automobile supplies, all standard
equipment and priced most reasonable. Make our garage your
headquarters—see the special equipment which makes for safer
and more comfortable riding. A complete line of'TIRES, TUBES,

Moving Picture Idea
Atcrihed to Chinese
Edison himself has said that most
of his Inventions are the development
of the idea of some oue who has pre

forth with the statement that the real
origin of the moving picture dates
back to China 7,000 years ago. The
Chinese, In 5000 B. C., had their
equivalent of our “pictures” iu their

1. David's Crimes (II Sam. 11).
L Adultery (vv. 4,5).
^ He by his kingly authority brought
Bathsheba, the beautiful wife of
Uriah, one of his brave soldiers, into
bis harem.
2. Murder (vv. 14-18).
David sought to cover up his shame
ful act of adultery with Bathsheba by
calling Uriah from the field of battle
and giving him a furlough at borne
with his wife. (He first gave blm hon
orable recognition by sending a por
tion of meat from the royal table—
v. 8.) Uriah’s high sense of military
duty and propriety would not allow
him to do this. ,
Falling in this, David corrupted him
by making him drank, with the ex
pectation that Uriah would thus go
home. When these schemes would
not work he resorted to the terrible
crime of exposing Uriah to the most
dangerous place in the battle where
be would surely be killed.
II. Contributing Factors in David’s
Fail.
1. Idleness (U;l).

David tarried at Jerusalem becaule
of Indolence or self-ludulgeoce.
2. He looked upon a beautiful wom
an (11:2).
As he was lounging in idleness, this
temptation was too great’ for him. He
yielded to bis lustful impulse and sent
his servants to bring the woman to
him. This action on the part of David
is absolutely Inexcusable. David bad
the power to turn from this sin and
thus escape temptation.
III. David Rebuked by Nathan, the
Prophet (12:1-12).
What David had done displeased
the Lord (11:2T). What he bad done
gratified his own carnal lust, but the
serious thing is that It displeased the
Lord. Because David was God’s Own,
God could not let the matter rest He
therefore sent Nathan, His prophet,
to .him.
1. The parable of the ewe lamb
(vv. 1-C).
Among the Jews it was customary
to have pet Iambs which were brought
up with the children of the family
and therefore regarded with tender
affection. Nathan pictures before
David a poor man whose sole posses
sion consisted of one such lamb, and a
rich neighbor when entertaining a
guest bad appropriated unto .himself
this lamb Instead of drawing upon bis
numerous flock. This so aroused
David’s anger that he declared that
the rich man should restore fourfold,
and in addition forfeit his life. Na
than declared: “Thou art the man.”

Odd Sea Birds
Frigate birds or men-o’-war are'
birds which are found on the Island
Ascension. The original species was
named Fregats aqulla by the natur
alist, Linnaeus, in 1758. They are
now‘known to be confined to this lit
tle oceanic rock. These odd sea birds
have bodies about the size of those
of ordinary barnyard hens, with mon
strous long wings, which spread as
much as ten feet Their bills are long
with hooked tips, which make them
dangerous weapons, and their feet are
so tiny ant) so weak that they can
scarcely waddle.
Wearisome
“The man who means well Is as
distressing as a camel’s hair under
shirt," said J. Fuller Gloom, the hu
man hyena. “He is so free from evil
Intent that he greatly resembles a
dead clam. On account of his inno
cence he is always getting into pre
dicaments that no one else would
think of, and after becoming em
broiled in trouble be expects, because
he meant well, that all the rent of us
will drop whatever we are doing and
rush to his rescue. I am weary of the
well-meaning man.” — Kansas Clt>
Times.
2. Sentence of jodgment (vv.7-12).
Perhaps no history records an in
dictment so terrible as this one.
(1) He recounted onto David God’s
peculiar favor, (vv. 7, 8).
God had taken him from the sheep-
cote and lifted him to the throne,
made him king over all IsraeL He
had* delivered him from Sanl’s mur
derous plots and he had inherited
Saul’s royal possessions.
(2) David’s shameful treatment of
God’s law. (v.9).
He pointed out that he had violated
both tables of the law by worshiping
the God of passion and had practiced
covetousness, robbery, lying and mur
der. «
(3) The awful judgment pronounced
(w. 10-12).
The prophet dedared that the sword
should never depart from David’s
house. He had used the sword to
slay Uriah. God in His retributive
justice permitted the sword to re
main in David’s house.
IV. David’s Confession (w. 13-23).
Tire confession of sin was so real to
David that he declared that It had
been committed against God (Pa 51:4).
He now was made fully conscious of
his broken condition. He realised
what it meant to be without inno
cence. Though he confessed his sin,
as recorded in Psalm 32, and God for
gave him, he had to safferifs conse
quence. ’*Wbatsoever a man sowetb
that shall he also reap.”
