THE TRACK RUNS ON
Out in thfe country the other day I
stood on the hilltop and saw the rail
way track, like a silver ribbon, run
ning away into the distance. The
sun was shining brightly. I could
perceive a train many miles away.
At night I stood upon the same hiH
and could see the track only for a lit
tle distance; beyond that it was swal
lowed up in shadows. But I know that
the track runs on v *
There are high moments in life
when we can see the far reach of
righteousness. And there is many a
dark hour when doubt and unfaith
settle down all around us.
Indeed our moments of vision are
comparatively few. Day after day
all we can do is to keep the revela
tions of those moments in our memory
and #lod on through the fog and ob
scurity. trusting more to faith than
to sight.
We cannot abide on the peaks.
Moat of our journey is through the
valley.
The merchant at his desk must
keep in mind hia larger plans even
when details would deny them.
The sailor must go on dead reckon
ing when there are no stars by which
he can set his course. But he knows
the stare are still there.
Even in love we come all too rarely
to the mountains of transfiguration
and most of the time we must trudge
grimly forward with hope, believing
what we have once seen and hoping
for what we shall see again.
Underneath the crowding evidefices
of the power of evil every man must
believe in those eternal ind far more
potent cosmic laws of good.. , '
Did you once ghrapse e great And
beautiful love burning like a shek-
inah?
However gross may be the present
darkness you must believe that the
fire still bums. The track runs on.
The soul tha^. will not go forward
until he can see every step of the way
to the end will advance but little.
Most of the time w e must be stepping
out into the. dark.
Th( man who is honest simply be
cause he knows that honesty is the
best policy, and is honest only so long
as it seams the best policy, has a poor
quality of honesty; for only that
honesty is the best policy which is
honest in the dark as well as in the
light; only that man deserves to be
called honest who ia willing to follow
the path of honesty even when it
seems to lead into the abyss.
None of us can see more than a
little way most of the time. For
tunate we are if, now and then, we
reach some height where the great
view unfold*. And if. afterwards,
the darkness seems to close in, we can
say to ourselves:
“The track runs on."

THE FACE A MIRROR OF THE MIND
Beauty does not consist in possess
ing any specific qualities. It depends
on a thousand intangible assets. The
number of women who are dazzling
beauties is very small indeed, but in
every woman, be she ever so plain, is
some beauty, which, if developed, will
greatly enhaned her attractiveness.
Natural beauty, with its regularity of
features and physical proportions, is
the gift of the gods, and must of
course be bom, but. beauty of facial
expression and of character and soul
arc priceless, and these may be culti
vated and acquired by »ny woman.
An artist once said to me of a cer
tain girl—“Her face is constantly
changing. She haa glances that are
fleeting and vanish before you can
analyze them. An interesting face—
her beauty comes and goes and is in
finitely more alluring than static
loveliness.”
Beautityl moments are possible to
all. Some of us make it very difficult
indeed for beauty to make Any head
way at all with our faces. We do this,
chiefly, by having the wrong thoughts

All of the massages and creams and
lotions and powders in the vRprld will
not do a particle of good if our mindh
do not funiish some spiritual' assis
tance. We may not have been gifted
at the start with anything particular
ly lovely in the way of faces, and then
we make the situation practioulmrly
hopeless by developing minds that
are quite the opposite, of beauty.
Think beautiful thoughts of hope,
joy, love and good cheer, and you
cannot miss reaping satisfactory re
sults. One who is depressed and
unhappy shows those thoughts and
feelings in the liges of the face, in
the expression of the^eyes, and in the
general physical appearance. Any
one who has fine thoughts is far dif
ferent looking from one who is not
experl ncing the joy of happiness.
Patience, good temper, hupior, toler
ance—a little time apart each day for
mental relaxation—these will pay us
back a hundredfold in visible beauty
that will be imprinted on our faces.
This is the first rule of beautv.
