Pursuant to a Decree of the Court of Common Pleas in case of Hotne Bank of Barnwell, et a)., against THURSDAY, JULY 15TH, 1626. Ambrose E. Gonzales. —A mighty oak has fallen in the forest of journalism. Ambrose E. Gonzales, *’ aged 69, years, author, editor and publisher, died suddenly at his home in Columbia early Sunday morning. His death is a loss not only to the newspaper profession in South Carolina, but to the State and the Nation. He was truly a great South Carolinian and, in the words of The News anti Courier, "No man loved South Carolina more or /ought more earnestly to serve South Carolina. And he loved her and served her, asking neither reward nor applause for himself. Applause did come to him in his later years, most generously, and It was very grateful to him, as it well might have been; but >t came spontaneously."* While his building of “The State" into a great newspaper is an out- atanding achievement, Mr. Gonzales, ’V a time when he was greatly handi capped by a physical affliction, won added fame by recording stories of the Negro and of South Carolina coastal country life that have been hailed far and near aa gems of literature, which, to quote again The News and Courier, “mirrored a time, mirrored a region, mirrored # people." . * A high tribute is paid the man by W. W, Ball, a former editor of The Slate, in the Allowing words: "Ambrose E. Gonzales did more for S-M’th Carolina than any man except ~ General Hampton had" done since the Confederate war.
