The position of posttnaster at
Barnwell pays $2,300 a year and, ac
cording' to the Civil Service Commis
sion, it is expected that appointments
will bet made as a result of this ex
amination unless k is found in the
interest of the service to fill the
vacancy by transfer or promotion.
It is also pointed out that this is not
an examination under the Civil Ser
vice Act and rules, but is held under
an executive order of May 10, 1921,
providing for such procedure.
Applicants must submit to the ex
aminer on the day of the eucammation,
their photographs, taken within two
years, securely pasted in the space
provided on the admission cards sent
them after their appUcmitions .are
filed. Tintypes or proofs will not?
be accepted.
Application form 2241 and form
2223, containing full information as to
the requirements to be met and the
character of the examination to be
given, may be obtained from any one
of the vacancy offices listed or from
the United States CiviFService Com
mission, Washington, D. C. Appli
cations must be properly executed,
showing the examination point at
which the applicant desire* to be ex
amined, and must be filed with the
Commission at Washington prior to
the close of business on the date speci
fied at the head of this announcement.

fact that so-called civil service cor-

status or coon action with ithe Govern
ment. Authentic information in re
gard to examination may be obtained
only from the United States Civil
Service Commission or an authorized
representative of the Commission, and

of September 12, 1921, and in the Oc
tober, 1921, suptement to the Postal
Guide.
The Post Office Department will not
nominate for appointment as post
master the husband or wife of a rural

Brown, of Barnwell, wMB is opposing
Senator E. D. Smith and former Sena
tor N. B. Dial for the seat now held
by the former. Speaker Brown ap
plied several epithets to Woodward,
who until recently was State hospital
inspector, and declared the latter had
abused him on the streets of Camden,
although, the Speaker charged, Wood-
ward had some weeks ago sought to
enter his employ as a political worker

Columbia, July 7.—A marriage of
interest throughout South Carolina is
that of Miss Georgi a Kirkland, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. George Difnbar
Kirkland, of Millitteville. Allendale
County, aj^l William S. Carter, which
occurred yesterday afternoon a t 4:30
o’clock in the parsonage of the Bain
Street- Methdist church, Columbia,
the Rev. W. B. Garrett, pastor of the
church, officiating. The ceremony
was very private, only members of
the immediate families being present.
There were po. attendants.
The bride was attractively gowned
in an afternoon costume of black and
white canton crepe with a large hat
of black Milan straw. She carried an
armful of pink Killarny roses.
Mrs. Carter is the daughter of Mr.
George D. Kirkland, past state com
mander of the Soms of Confederate
Veterans, and a large land owner and
planter of Allendale County. She is
prominently connected in (hat section
of the State and is popular with a
wide circle of friends. ^ She is also
pleasantly remembered in Columbia
where she received her education at
Chicora Colletfe. #

Mr. Carter m the son of Mr. and
Mrs. H. L, C-arter and though origi
nally from West Virginia, he has
made his home in Columbia for several
years and was educated here at the
Columbi a high school and the Univer
sity of South Carolina. During the
World War he served in the navy and
he is a member of the Richland Post of
the American Legion. Ho is with the
Underwriters department of Seibels,
Bruce and Co., and i* a popular young
business man of the city.
Mr. and Mrs. Carter left immediate
ly after their maniage for the moun
tains of North Carolina to be away on
an extended motor trip. W’hen they
return they will make their home irl
the Nj-w Southern apartments.
To Present Play.
The latngley-Rath night school hoys
will come hack to Hilda and give
their hlack-face minstrel show again
on July 17th at 8:30 p. on Owing to
inclement weather the,y were unable
to present their play as planned in
June.
Part of the proceeds will go (o the
Hilda school. The Aiken County
boys will use their funds to go to the
opportunity school. A good atten
dance is urged to help a worthy
cause. Admission 13 and 25 cents.

his allegations that the Senator “goes
about year after year tDemagoging
about the State aV"a farmer.”
Referring to the statement on Sena
tor Smith’s circular that he js the
only Senator whose sole occupation is
farming, the speaker asserted that
there are many representatives of
agriculture in Congress, although
they may have other interests, and
added; “I don’t call that false pre
tense. I won’t say what it is. If I’ve
got to go to the Senate by false pre
tenses and by making you promises
I know that I can’t keep, then I’ll stay
at home,” he declared.
Senator Smith, reviewing his record
in part, said: “I don’t believe any
man or woman can find a single in
stance in my record of eighteen years
as your servant where I have not up
held the dignity and welfare of my
State and nation to the limit of my
ability.”
Former Senator Dial also recounted
his record and continued his advocacy
of safe and sound principles in govern
ment, with no special class to be
favored.

The word pictures depicting a gen
tle and a refined woman do not fit
in with the sordid facta. A gentle
woman does not pack an au.omatic
gun in her handbag and deliberately
await the opportunity of turning this
instrument of dea> h upon her chosen
victim. She does not desecrate, the
House of God. turning a sacred place
into a deadly ambush. Only the cold,
deliberate .(hirst for blood is recon-

WATER WORKS—The Town of
Barnwell shall have the option of
either of the folowing propositions:
1st. We will furnish power for
operation of water works system
on the following basis: 4 cents per
K. W. for first 2000. 3% cents per
K. W. for next” 2000 and 3 cents
per K. W. for all over 4000.
Or
2nd. Wc will pump all water
used into the elevated tank using
the town’s equipment for C cents
per thousand gallons.
Or
3rd. We will operate the water
system for the city furnishing the
town free all water used for sewer
age system and all fire hydrant ser
vice and furnish water consumers on
a scale of rates ten per cent less
• than present water rates now
charged, with the understanding
that in case the town so desires,
we will turn the water system
qack to the town at any time on
six months’ notice.
We guarantee to keep and main
tain the pumps in proper condi
tion and we guarantee that using
the present town equipment and
any additional equipment that the
'town may from time to time see
fit to install to furnish at all times
an adequate supply of w^ter. —
