Barnwell Baptist Church
In the 124 years of its history, the
Barnwell Baptist church has wor
shipped in feur buildings. Where
were they lose ted 7 In 1804 the
church was Meorporated after its or
ganisation in 1802. The evidence as
to the location of the first house
of worship is meagre. The minutes
from its organisstion to 1812 are
lacking. It appears that in January
1829 “Brother O'Bannon reported to
the chnrch that he had obtained sub
scriptions sufficient in amount to
authtfize the church to appoint a
buihmig committee and make con
tracts for the building of a new
Baptist church, in the village of Barn
well/* The committee appointed was
Jennings O' Bannon, Lewis M. Brown
David Cave, Angus Patterson and
B. H. Brown. This new church was
located at or about the present
Bethlehem Baptist church, as indi
cated by those graves of former mem
bers now found there. Along in the
fifties, this church built for the above
committee was turned over to the
colored members of the church, and
a new church was built for the white
mernty^ra on Ihe present site, and
which was recently torn down to
make way for the present brick
building. With its galleries for such
colored members as could not find
room in the church recently turned
over to them, who preferred to wor
ship with their owners, it was a splen
did type of church architecture of
that day, and was a worthy landmark
of old Barnwell.
This leaves /Us to account
house of Worship. It ;is a well
known t|radition among the ; older
members of the present church that
a church stood on the present lot be
fore the erection of the building in
1829. Was this church the first
house of worship of Barnwell Bap
tists T There is also an equally well
.known tradition that a blacksmith
shop also stood on the location of the
present building. Now in Septem
her 1844, just fourteen years after
the church authorised in 1829 was
built “Bro. Preston Harley asked the
permission of the church to continue '
his shop on the old chnrch lot so long
os the present btfilding stands. The
church consented provided he would
assist Bro. B. II. Brown in making a
substantial palling around said lot
and all the g.-cves with one er man
gates, who had previously consented
to erect said patting for permission
to build a workshop.** The natural
inference is either that the first
church building was used as a shop,
and ait; the time of Bro. Harley's re
quest was in decay, or that it wan re
moved to make way for a new shop,
upon the conditions expressed by the
church. At a church confenence held
on May 15, 1917, P, W. Price, J. K.
SneUing, G. W. ManviUe, W. C. Mil
hous and J.'-B. Armstrong were ap
pointed to locate the corners of the
oid church lot.
