tion of the soda in this manner
serves a double purpose, destroys
the insect, and at the same time fer
tilizes the cotton crop. Mr. Price has
made eight bales of cotton to the
plow each year since he has been
trying the experiment and does not
use any calcium arsenate.
H is not known whether any one
else has tried Mr. Price's expert
ment, but it wiH be well for others
to try it on a small scale this year,
and if 4t proves as effective as he
has found it to be it will no tbe so
difficult to overcome the ravages of
the weevil. The sodg is applied late
in the evening and early in the
morning in order to get the benefit
of the moisture in the air, as it is too
dry to apply it in the middle of the

A bout five Weeks ago Col . Ed gar
A. Brown, Speaker of the House of
Representatives, invited the senior
classes of the four High Schools in
Barnwell County—Barnwell, Black-
ville, Dunbarton and WUliston—to
Columbia as his guests on an inspec
tion and observation tour of the Capi
tal of our State. The trip was very
interesting as only two members of
our clasa had ever visited Columbia.
March 11th was set as the eventful
day. •
Plans had been made to leave at
eight o'clock. The day did not prom
ise to be very enjoyable because of
the heavy downpour of rain which
was still fast falling from the night
before. We left, however, at eight
fifteen in spite of the inclement
weather, and found the roads so slip
pery that ore of our cars slid into a
ditch and had to be pushed out W T e
amrived at the State House about
eleven-thirty o’clock.
We were first taken to the House
of Representative*. There Col
Brown, Speaker of the House, was
presiding. They were voting on a
, bkU when we went in, and after lis
tening to the voting, we were taken
to the Senate Chamber, where Mr.
R. S. Stewart was speaking on the
• abolition of the soft drink revenue
tax.
From the Senate Chamber we went
upstaiis to the Confederate Relic
Room. This was very interesting be
cause it was there that "e saw relics
of some of the great (lenerals and
Captains of whow we are studying
this year in American History. There
- were relics of Generals under whom
oar grandfathers and gieat-grand-
faithers fought during the Confeder
ate war.
Among the relics which we saw
were the following: A piece of wood
_ picked up by F. Nernsee from the
Bank No. 263.
THE HOME BANK,
and showed us the statues of George
Washington, Wade Hampton, and the
Palmetto Monument. He pointed out
the stars on the west side of" the
State House which were made by
Sherman in shelling it from across
the Congaree River. Our men burn
ed the bridge between Sherman’s
army and the city, but they laid pon
toons and crossed anyway. On the
rear of the Capitol we were shown
the monument to the women of the
Cefederacy.
At 1:30 p m., Mr. Sargeant, the
photographer made a th*r
entire group including Col. Brown,
Mr. jD. W. Heckle, Representative
from Blackville. This picture was
made on the lawn some distance from
the building in order to get a view of
the Capitol.
Col. Brown then took us to the
Governor’s office and introduced us
to Gov. Thomas G. McLeod, with
whom jve had the pleasure of shak
ing hands.
At 2:00 p. m.. w e went to the Jef
ferson Hotel for dinner, where Col.
(Brown played host to the entire group
of guests. A long table was nicely
prepared for us as Mr. Brown had
made previous arrangements. A

finished we rose and gave Col.

leave us and go back to the State
House, thy Legislature being in ses
sion. '
The first place we visited after din
ner was the penitentary. Here we
were carried through and explained
all the different departments. We
saw the main jail which contained
the cells, the kitchen, dining room,

There were Sherman’s torch which
he used in burning the city of Col
umbia and a barbe used to arm John
Brown’s men in his raid and seizure
of the United States Arsenal. John
Bnown issued a call to the slaves to
rise in rebellion against their mas
ters, and this barbe was made in his
own blacksmith shop There was
the hat worn by Jefferson Davis
while he was President of the Con
federacy. We also saw another hat
worn ‘by Wade Hampton during the
Civil war, and the coat and vest of
Captain Angus Brown, who was the
.grandfather of one member of our
•class. In this relic room we saw the
first and last money issued to che
soldiers during the war. There were
•also several flags which had escaped
being torn to pieces during the cam
paign.
We then went through the State
Library which is used during the
session cf the Legislature as an en-
•grossing room. We saw the statue
<of John C. Calhoun, which is .the
original cast and was purchased bv
the State for $800.00. Only five
statutes were made from thisr cast,
all selling for $10,000.00 each. Just
a few feet away was a large marble
tablet on which was written the or-
dinance of secession. On another
am&ll tablet was the life of Emily
Geiger whom they say never did ex-

house. In the death house is the
electric cair, the death cells For
those sentenced to death, and the
dead room with tables for strapping
the dead victims to get them ready
for burial.
On leaving the penitentiary, we
took a tour of the various parts of
the city. We saw the Governor’s
Mansion,ihe City Water Works, Col
umbia College, Chicora College, th"
University of South Carolina,''- the
Lutheran and Presbyterian Semina*-;
ies. Logan Grammar-' School, and the
Columbia High School. We rode by
the Insane Asylum and Elmwood
Cometary hack to the State House.
At 4:40 o’clock we left for home.
The ride back was more pleasant
than the one going as the roads had
dried off considerably. We got back
home safe and sound, a little tired,
it is true, hut very much indebted to
Col. Edgar A. Brown for a delightful
day.

tried by Mr. Floyd Price, who farms
in the soathri-n section of Washing
ton County, near Harrison.’ When the
cotton is large enough to develop
buds he begin* the fight by applying
fifty pounds of nitrate of soda per
acre, direct to the plant. As the
atmosphere supplies enough mois
ture to cause the soda to dissolve the
