Wants Wild Flowers
♦
Protected in State
Chibs of South
To the Federated
Carolina:
As chairman of conservation of
Natural Resources 1 ask that >’ou
have your club pass resolutions to
encourage the protection of wild
flowers in South Carolina. There can
be no question as to the need for such
protection and the thing can best l»e
accomplished by molding public senti
ment and later laws will be parsed
that will give expression to this senli-
Hp, „ ment and that will be obeyed.
The protection of wild flowers in
South Caroling is far more than a
• mere matter of sentiment or an es
thetic gesturev It is an important
^ factor in -the roeteftet' lufrrTftnTriTf
our State. Florida has featured her
tropical flora and sold it to. the
world. The Spring glory of the
Carolina forest is our rare and pric?-
less asset. Where this natural beauty
has been conserved and advertised
as at Summerville and at Middleton
and Magnolia Gardens its fame has
grown world wide. If properly pro
tected the lovilness of- the Carolina
forests will render our State the
Spring playground of the nation dur-
March, April and May. And the
world, lured by our natural beauty
and discovering our latent resources,
we will enter upon an era of unsur
passed prosperity.
Just rc»w it is the season when the
woods are beginning to be mantled
with the glory of the Cherokee rose,
wild azelea, dogwood, Judas tree, and,
everywhere, our own lovely State
flower, the yellow jessamine. Every
one who owns a car now revels in this
not of Spring wild flowers. But if
e^ry car stops to take home these
delicate forest blossoms bur heritage
of beauty wjll soon be but a memory.
Wild flowers, apart from their en-
virormcr.t, lose their charm. They
were never intended to be pot plants'
or parlor ornaments. Remember
there are no gardeners in the foresf a
to carefully tend . and propagate
The only method by which
they can survive is by reseeding
themselves. If they are mercilessly
broken and torn and exposed to de-
_ structive fires they must soon cease
