THURSDAY, APRIL 8TH. 1926.
Be Sdre to Attend.
^rnrnmmmmm
In an open letter to the people of
Barnwell County, published on page
one of this issue. Auditor W. H. Man-
ning urges a full attendance at a
meeting to be held with representa
tives of the State Tax Commission in
his office next Monday afternoon at
one o’clock, as he fears an effort on
the part of the Commission to en
force a 12 per cent, valuation on the
taxable property in Barnwell County,
'
which, as he points out, would be
• \
confiscatory under the present levies.
Whether this be the object of the
visit or not, remains to be seen, but
we understand that such an attempt
has been made in other counties and
when it failed, an effort to effect a.
‘'compromise” on the basis of doubl-
« v
ing the assessment as compared with
last year has been made. This, we
are reliably informed, was the case
in Aiken County.
The People-Sentinel “views with
alarm” any effort at this time to in
crease the tax burden. The late la
mented General Assembly made a
great gesture of reducing the State
levy from to 5 mills and any in
crease in the assessed valuation of
property, be it ever so small; woufd
make that slight reduction look like
the proverbial .‘10 cents with a hole in
it. Property owners as a whoie,
many of whom have seen their lands
go under the autioneer’s hammer for
unpaid taxes, are not in the mood to
* V
submit to any increase if they can
help it, and surely the sovereign peo
ple of South Carolina should be ab'.o

creation, although miwiy are of the
firm opinion that the State Tax
Commission has almost assumed the
proportions of a Frankenstein and
threatens to ruin those who brought it
into being While we believe that the
Commission has rendered a real ser
vice to the people of the State
come instances, we cannot commend
all that it has done, and we see in
this visit to Barnwell and other
counties the opening wedge in a cam
paign to increase the taxes on real
estate. We hope that the members
of the Board of Assessors will fight
the effort to the last ditch and refuse
to agree to any increase. Our im
pression is that the members of the
Commission some time ago acknowl
edged that they have no legal ?ight
to enforce an increase in valuation
but intended using “moral suasion”
on the county officials.

Measuring
Values
Is all right, but there are also measures that come in handy*
here’s an example. She: “I want a pair of bloomers to w*ear
around my gymnasium.” Clerk (absently) “Certainly, Miss, what
is the size of your gymnasium?” When it comes to measuring
> values we contribute generously with our super-repair service,
us repair your car and be assured of thoroughly accurate
