Cotton Growin* Contest.
There is a contest beinR arranged
in South Carolina by the Extension
Division, in cooperation with cotton
mills and others interested, to foster
the production of cotton with the
better length of staple. Good prizes
are going to lie awarded to winners
in this contest, and is open to all
cotton growers in South Carolina.
The first requirement is that all of
the cotton shall have a staple of one
inch or better, besines this require
ment, the rewards will be based upon
the largest yield. Five acres of cot
ton is the amount required for the
cbntest. Applications must be re
ceived not later.than May 1st. Re
cords are to be kept through-out and
then turned over to the Extension
Service. Records made must not bo
turned in later than Dec. 15th. Appli
cations for the contest may be hial
from the County Demonstration
Agent, Harry G. Boylston. and as
soon a* ' possible thereafter each
applicant will be notified as to the
approval or disapproval of his ap
plication for participating in the
contest. Further informtion con
cerning this contest may be had from
this County agent. The list of the
attractive prizes will be made known

' Death of Margaret Zcigler
... Springfield, March iR.—Margaret
Zeigler, age fourteen, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Zeigler, died at
her home near Springfield Wednes
day, March 10th. She was stricken
with pneumonia and died very sud
denly »rt one o’clock p. m.

ways won the love of all who knew
her; hut then we should feel that
God, in His infinite wisdom, always
dispenses His providence for the bet
terment of His Kingdom.
Everybody loved Margaret, hut
He loved her best, and it- is with this
reassurance that we should try to
comfort oui selves, even though "t is
heart-rending to he without her.
Margaret was the sunshine of the
home. She had a lovable charncte-.

Her sunny disposition wa'S adequat *
to reach the love of anyone. She wa ?
playful with children, and nothing
pleased her more than to devise with
her own hands a playhouse that
would cheer the heart of any child.
When in company with grown people
her kindness and respect were su« h
as would Ip. worthy of emulation.
Funeral services were conducted
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. T.
Odom, of Blackville,, A Margaret's

place in the Blackville cemetery.
Besides her mother and father, she
is survived by two brothers. Johnio
Alvin, age seventeen, and William,
age nine. Also a number of friends
and relatives.
One Who Loved Her.
Buried in Allendale.
The body of Mr. Charles Mitchell
Hiers, who died Sunday morning at
Tiis residence in Augusta after an ill
ness of several months, was taken to
ADendale Monday afternoon and laid
to rest in the Swallow Savannah ceme
tery, the funeral services being con
ducted at the grave.
Charles M. Hier? was born in Col
leton County. South Carolina, on Oc
tober 17, 1846, a son of Mr. and Mrs.
P. J. Hiers, who lived near Smoaks
Cross roads. At the outbreak of the
War Between the States, he enlisted
in the Confederate army, in the regi
ment commanded by Colonel Col-
cock. which was a oavt of the com
mand of General Joseph K Johnston.

the war he was married to Miss Re
becca Raysor of Colleton County, and
ahe was the mother of his two sons,
Dr. C. M. Hiers of Williamston, S. C.,
and B. J. Hiers of Waynesboro, Gn ,
and the grandmother of B. J. Hiers,
Jr., also of Waynesboro. She died
aerentl years ago in Allendale. His
toecond wife was Miss Sallie Raysor,
who survives him.-At the close of
the war, Mr. Hiers returned to his
old home in Colleton County and
devoted himself to farming and to
