Soft Drink Tax Moanure in Senate |

Kolurnbia, March 8.—The present
Mission of the general Assembly is
apparently breiathin^ its* lasi r In
nil proba’hility adjournment sine die
by Saturday will be had.
It is true thitt nothing: of a State
wide nature has fH^sso‘1 both Houses.
There is little probatnlity that any
thing of such „ character will tret by.
The Senate has passed x the appro
priations bill. It will be x reported
back to the House Monday \ni>rht
with amendments and the House will
refuse to concur in them Conferees

from each hoily will T>e named and
it is not beleivcd they will have much
difficulty in adjusting their differ
ences.
In the meantime the Senate will
take up the passage of the soft drinks
tax, 4he revenue measure- needed to
produce the money appropriated in
the appropriation hill, „
There is fcoinjr to be a hard fitfht
on this. The cosmetic tax and the
tax on ice cream have been removed
by the House. But this year they are
trying to enact ttie soft drinks tax
as a permanent law. I^ast year it
was a temporary measure only and
then it barely irot through. As to
whether it will survive the onslaughts
which u ro certain to he made in the
Senate remains to he seen. It is ad
mitted that the vote ia troin^ to be
close and on a close vote anything is
liable to happen. The Senate will Ik*
the center of attraction during the
Week.
But the Senate is. expected, to pass
this measure by a narrow maririn.
Then there will he nothing to do ex
cept adopt the conference report on
the appropriation bill which should
be ready and £o home.
There are many important hills on
the calendars of both Houses. Some
of them may slip throcivrh hut it is
not believed that adjournment would
la* delayed one single day in order to
act on any measure now on the calen
dar of either House, the appropria
tion bill and soft drinks measure of
course l*eini' excepted.
A modified revaluation or equali
zation scheme has been introduced in
the House at the last moment. The
Senate has appointed a cc mmrttt e to
look into legislation lookiri” towards
equalization or revaluatin" It is
admitted by the I'oil'e members that
the bill introd nvd i- hut a short step
in the right direction bet they hope
to lu* able to take this stop.
If the House doe^ me chaiur» its
mood it will kill this bill as it has

It’s hard enough to think of such

ter! a long drawn out fight.
The revaluation bilf, which the
House promised to consider, has been
embalmed in the ways and means
committee room all year. It has uot
even been reported.
If the revaluation hill as introduc
ed in the House Friday docs become
a law it will he passed this week un
less there is a hitch : n the free con
ference committee on the appropria
tion bill or the Senate docs the un
expected with the soft drinks tax
measure. Then that will require a
few weeks longer. It is election year
and the men are anxious to get h >me.
They know what kind of a taste the|
record session of last year loft in the
mouths of the citizens of the State.
The men who are hacking the re
valuation scheme in the House are
honest in their endeavor to get somp
kind of tax reform started. They
liav ( . tried in various ways all dur
ing the session to get amendments
passed hut th«*se have been slaugh
tered by the House. If this one gets
by it will be quite a tribute to those
who fight for it.
Adjournment this week seems al
most certain unless u hitch incurs.
There will l>e little if any attempt to
cause the legislators to return the
foitnwfhg week unless it is absolutely
necessary.

It has been said that sleep cures
more nerve-disorders' than all the.
drugs prescribed, by science, to
which . statement most educated
physicians willingly subscribe.
Normal deep is both preventive
and curative for distressing states
of the nervous system. Drug sleep
is never natuba!—nor is the stupor
caused by- over-feeding. For best
effects, sleep should be indulged at
night.
Observe tho new-bem babe- who
sleeps most of his time, except
when aroused to take nourishment;
he is building a nervous system for
many years of active service. His
food contains the necessary in
gredients, ready-prepared for his
appropriation; being too feeble to
take exercise, his sole business and
occupation are the building of the
rudimental nerves along with the
“temple’’ in which they are com
fortably housed. Sleep is the ideal
condition wherein Nature may ac
complish her wonderful ends. Your

same physiologic law.
Sleep is the faithful chaperon of
the nervous system, exerting her
vigilance as long during" life as her
requirements urn respected. Her
approach is gentle—her touch sub
