Barnwell and other counties in
South Carolina failing to enforce the
provisions of the motor vehicle law
have penalized themselvqs for their
failure by being deprived of their
otherwise due share of January’s gas
oline tax receipts, now being distri
buted.
The.counties’ quota of the gasoline
tax receipts for the month—amount
ing to $361,114.64, of which 60 per
cent, is allocated to the State high
way department and 4q per cent to
the counties—is distributed on the
basis of motor vehicle registration
and the amount of the tax money al
lotted to the county varies, therefore,
fn direct proportion to the number of
cars carrying licenses.
Barnwell County is one of the
counties in the State that received a
• •
smaller amount in January than for
the previous month, and other coun
ties in this section similarly affected
are Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg and
Hampton, the distribution being as
follows: *
December January
Aiken $3,566.14 S2.S08.07
Allendale 1,094.30 572.90
Bamberg ...i 1,412,33 L234 94

The Presentment of the Grand Jury
This seilion has been treated to a
variety of weather during the past
fen days. On Tuesday afternoon of
last week, a thimoerstoim brought
up visions of mid-summer. The fol
lowing day there was a drop in tem
perature and snow flurries were re
ported from various sections of the
•imunty. Freezing weather made its
appearance Thursday, after which
the ihercury liegan climbing again,
with thivv^sult that Sunday and Mon
day were x springlike in warmth.
Some trees in Barnwell are beginning

Chester, Feb.\14.—The Rev. A. Ru

pal Church and one 6f the best known
rectors in the State, has been tender

James’ Episcopal Church of Marrietta,
Ga. He will make known his decisiv

Mr. Morgan came to Chester from
Barnwell. He was graduated from
the University of North Carolina and
the General Theological Seminary of
New York. The church has grown
greatly under his rectorship. He has
identified himself with many pro
gressive, civic amf. patriotic move
ments here and his hundreds of friends
hope that he will remain here. He
has accomplised a wonderful work
with Chesetr’s hoys, being the scout

activities.
Mr. Morgan is secretary of the
upper South Carolina Episcopal dioc
ese, as well as publicity director. He
is also editor of The Piedmont
Churchman, the Episcopal publication
He and his charming family are a
great asset to this community.
Thieves have been active in Barn
well during the past week, two rob
beries and one attempt to rob haVing
been committed. Friday night an
unknown person or persons entered
Mazursky’s Department Store on
Court House Square and stole seven
suits of clothes, three boxes of shirts
and possibly other items that have
not been missed from the large stock
of goods. Entrance was effected by
way of the front- door, which was
forced open. Mr. Mordecai .Mazurs-
ky states that all of the suits were
small sizes and were taken from one
show case.
The same night an attempt was
made to rob the store of Weiner Bros,
on Main Street. The attempted rob
bery was a failure, however, as the
thieves were unable to force the
front door.'
Sunday night, about nine o’clock,
the garage of Vickery Bros., on Burr
and Washington Streets, was entered
and robbed of several automobile
tire tubes, patches, etc. A local man

There are no clues to the identity
of the thieves, but judging from the

It is believed that the robberies were
committed by local persons who arc
familiar with the stores here.
