Ford National Show
Week Is Great Event

The showroom of the Dicks Auto
’ <3o., local Pord dealers, will be just
bout the most popular place in the
'"city this week. Ford National Show
WeeJf, which opened Saturday and J
< r will continue through next Saturday
evening, has brought out the greatest
t xhibit in the history of the Ford
Motor Company. Not only is a full
line of cars being shown, but the
trim lines of the various types are
enhanced by such new appointments
fcs top boot and gypsy curtains, wind
shield wings and windshield wiper
supplied by the Ford Motor Company.
This special equipment, is being ex
hibited for the first time in _ Ford
Natoinal Show week and should prove
mighty interesting even to those who
.-;re already driving improved Ford
cars.
In addition to the cars and special
ties, representative types of Ford
.—Ton-Trucks and Fordson Tractors
- with both industrial and agricultural
equipment will be displayed.
Arrangements for the week’s dis-
j.lay here were made by, the Char-
'otte branch of the Ford Motor Co.
to coincide with > exhibits in every
‘dealer’s showroom in the United
States. The purpose of the display
is to give the people of Barnwell and
vicinity an opportunity to become
better acquainted with the improved
Ford cars. Ford service so thor-
I jr^ughly covers the county that there
a showroom convenient to practical
ly every home and the displays will
Remain open in the evening to ac
comodate those whose day is occu
pied.
In Ford cars which will be shown
during the National Show week are
incorporated improvements in body
"design and construction and chassis
Refinements more pronounced than
r.ny made in the histoiy of the Model
T chassis. Although thousands of
these improved cars in operation all
ever the country at the present time,
there a r v s t'll many persons who
have not had an opportunity to view
the entire line and inspect in detail
the improvements which so generally
increase the popularity of Ford cars.
The first impression of the Ford
cars for l&i?t) is one of increased
Wauty and smartness. Bodies are
hmger and lower, fenders hang low-
over -the wheels and closed cars are
bnished in rich harmonious color
schemes. Rut beauty is not the only
duality to !>encfit by the redesigning,
iding comfort has been increased by
ider, lower* seats and greater leg-
om. New features of convenience
have also been incorporated in these
new cars. The gasoline, d mk is now
tilled from outside the car and in the
open types, a door at the driver’s left
permits entry or exit without dis
turbing the front seat passenger.
Both transmission and rear wheel
brakes have been enlarged.

MEXICO WORKS.
THE DEVIL A BUILDER.
WE FEAR TO JUMP.
A $10,000, 000 TRAIN,
The J. G. Whitq Engineering Cor
poration undertakes a $30,000,000 ir
rigation scheme for Mexico. Any
thing that helps Mexico pleases us,
BUT what about the waters of the
Colorado River that wander, wasted,
through the United States and then
down into Mexico? .
As fast as she uses water for irri
gation, Mexico establishes an inter
national right with which this country
must not interfere.
While Western States are fighting
as to which shall have the water that
goes to waste through the deep can
yon, while private power companies
block any use of that water, fearful
that the people may get the benefit,
Mexico will establish a claim, and our
States through which the great river
passes will be informed that they
must not draw off enough water to
interfere with Mexi^ofs established
irrigation rights.
President Cooledge might interest
himself in that. It may become a
serious problem for himself or his
successors.

C. V Nepper of Randolph, Mass.,

and exhibited the species called
“Turken” at the New England
poultry show last weekf! Poultry
men say it is a very toothsome
fowl for the dinner table.
Greenwood, Jan. 10.—Edgar A.
Brown, speaker of the South Carolina
house of representatives, has volun
teered; to defehd, without any cost,
Aubrey Lee Nickels, Greenwood
youth, who has twice been sentenced
to death in Florida for an alleged at
tack upon a woman.
This became known here when
Representative Sam King of Green-
-wood, a close friend of the speaker,
reived a letter asking that the of
fer of services be communicated to
R. W. Nickels, father of the young
man. The news was forwarded to
the boy’s mother, who went to Jack
sonville a few days ago to be near
her son.
Speaker Brown said he was in
spired to make the offer only be
cause he believed in the innocence
of Nickels, who was recently grant
ed a new trial by the Florida su
preme court some months after his
second conviction. The attack is al
leged to have taken place at De Land
in 1921.

Aj-e you dragging along day after
f.y with a dull, nagging backache?
Do you feel tired, lame achy; suD
fer sharp, torturing pair.s at every
j-udden move? Then look to your kid
neys! Colds, strain and,‘overwork
weaken the kidneys and bring on
ihrobbing backache and knife-like
twinges. Don’t risk serious kidney
disease! Use'Doan’s Pills—a stimu
lant diuretic to the kidnevs. Read
what this Barnwell resident says:
Mrs. Clara Harley, says: ’‘Dur
ing the day the misery in my back
played me.out. A sudden twinge often
carted through my kidneys when I
stooped and-when I straightened my
head felt dizzy land peculiar. My

Three of the largest, richest Luth
eran churches in New York are con
sidering a merger, the combination
to build a skyscraper with a* church
tucked away in it, according to mod
ern ideas.
How would that impress Martin
Luther, who says in his “Table Talks”:
“For where God built a Church, there
the devil would also build a chapel.”
If the Lutherans build a skyscraper
chuich, would the devil find it neces
sary also to build a skyscraper
chapel ?
Reverend James S. Montgomery,
chaplain of the House of Representa
tives, puts the modernist and funda
mentalist problem in few words;
“Modernists say, “There ain’t no
he^^. J, Fundamentalists say, “The
hell there ain’t.”
The average man says, “There may,
there may not be, such a superheat
ed resort. But to avoid running risks
I shall behave decently.”
You may add that he doesn’t
amount to much who refrains from
sin only because he fears that he
may go to hell.
to kill themselves in Venice on one
day last week. “General misery” is
the explanation. Gas was the fav
orite exit, revolvers are so expensive.
Jumping from a height is even cheap
er and surer than gas. There is no
turning back once you start down.
But those tired of life are usually
weak in will, and it takes will to
jump into space, men since their al
leged early free days having had
bred in them an intense aversion to
falling off the limb. •
That, evolutionists say, is why we
dream so often of falling. And it
explains woman’s horror of snakes.
The snakes could crawl out along the
limb and steal the sleeping baby from
its mother. Any good anti-evolution-
that’s nonsense.
Make a good mousetrap and, as
you know, the world will wear out
a path to your door. Run a railroad
well and your path across the clohti-
nent will also be well used. The
Twentieth Century, New York Cen
tral train between New York- and
Chica'go, ran in seven sections one
way and six the other recently. Its
managers proudly announce that they
took in on that one train $10)000,000
last year.
It costs more to go from New York
to Chicago now comfortably, than it
did to go from New York to Liver
pool on the fine old steamship Spain,
first class, years ago. The flying ma
chine will correct that. Men now of
middle age will live to head this:
“Chicago to New York in three hours,
round trip $25..”
And Prave to You the superiority of This
Wonderful Gas.

Great Britain with her rubber mo-
nopoly takes from this country about
$700,000,000 a year, more than enough
to pay her debt to us.
By reason of reprisal the Massa
chusetts Legislature is asked to drive
out British insurance .companies.
Such talk is foolish. Uncle Sam, his,
pockets bulging with gold, and play
ing the part of a “cry baby,” makes
himself unnecessarily rediculous.
Besides, in the California fire Eng-
lish insurance companies paid what
they owed in full, which is more than
can be said for some American Com
panies.
Good-bye to the horse. Los Ange
les is the first city to have “no-horse”
streets. Washington forbids horse-
drawn vehicles on four important
thoroughfares. That will spread.
The horse is happier in the coun
try, away from hard streets. He is
no longer necessary in the city, no
excuse for bim. Even' if were a
little cheaper ^or some work, which
is doubtful, he should vanish. Get a
truck.
