of relief, the prediction being for
rein* Tuesday and Wednesday.
Columbia, Sept. V.—Rains late to
day brought a measure of relief to
drought-stricken sections of South
Carolina.
In some portions of the Piedmont,
where the drought has been most
severe, scattering rains were report-
' ed. Thunder storms late today and
tonight broke a protracted rainless
bpell in the central and eastern sec
tions of the State.
* The rain, however, was swallowed
un by the parched earth as fast as it
fell.
Where It Rained.
Showers were reported at several
points in Spartanburg County, while
refreshing thunder storms visited
Florence, Columbia, Chester, Rock
Hill, Newberry and other sections.
One-half inch of rain was reported at
Rock Hill and .66 of an inch at Flor
ence.
Thunder, lightning and considera
ble wind accompanied the rainfall at
Columbia and in Richland. At Adams
Pond, a resort about eight miles east
of Columbia, a number of trees were
blown down but no damage was re
•ported. Hail was reported in the
southeastern section of the co»inty.
The rains came after a day of in
tense heat. In Spartanburg all Sep
tember heat records were broken to
day when the thermometer registered
106 degrees, while the mercury reach
ed 102 at 4:30 o’clock in Columbia.
More Expected Today.
The forecast gave promise of more
rain tomorrow, “unsettled with scat-

tered thunder showers” being the
weather prediction for this section.
Special prayers for rain were of
fered m churches generally through
out the State yesterday. Governor
McLeod, in an official proclamation,
had set aside the day as one of “fast
ing and prayer” for relief from the
drought.

Prices!
Two months ago, when the cotton crop
promised a record yield, we bought a large
stock of furniture for our fall trade. We do not
want to carry over this stock into another year
and have decided to price furniture at figures
that will move every article in the store. Here
