“Barnwell Is Proud of Him.
Under the above caption, Monday’s
issue of the News and Courier cork-
talned the following editorial com
ment on the recent election of Col.
Harry D. Calhoun, of this city, as
president of th? South Carolina State
Bankers’ Association:
“Barnwell is not a large county in
point of population, but there has
never been a time when the county
was not contributing one or -more men
to the public life of the State. At the
present moment the people of Bam
well are especially proud of the fact
that Col. Calhoun has just been elected
head of the South Carolina bankers
The Charleston paper then quotes
the fcditorial appearing in last week’s
issue of The People-Sentinel in re
ference to Col. Calhoun’/i election.
And, we might say here in passing,
distinguished sons are not this
county’s only specialty. Our women
are the fairest of the fair and (get
ting down to more ordinary things)
our crops, this year at least, are
among the finest in the State. The
Virginia-Carolina Field Trial Associa
tion has just placed its stamp of ap
proval on trial grounds near this
dty Which are Heel ared to' Be the
finest South of Saskatchewan.
The poet most assuredly had Barn
well County in mind when he gave
vent to his feelings in the following
lines: ^ •
“Here’s to the land of the long leaf
pine— - ‘
The sunny land where the sun
doth shine—
Where the weak grow strong and
the itrong- grrow great—
Here’s to down home—the Pal
metto State.’’
All of which being true, it is hard
to understand the stampede to the
trophic wilds of Florida, unless there
bo more than a modicum of truth in
the statement thnt.“far away cattle
have long horns.”
They Brought Home the Bacon »
Every true son of Barnwell will re
joice with us in the announcementtha,
the Virginia-Carolina Field, Trial As
sociation has selected this city for
their meeting piaqe the last week in
November, 1925. That this f« so is
due primarily., to the efforts of the
Rev. R. W. Humphries, Solomon Hiatt,
Esq., and Mr. J. W. Patterson and
several others’ who cooperated «o

An invitatiblj was first given tn
the Georgia Club, of Which Mr. Hum
phries is a member, and when f its
members, loyal as they are to their
own State, regretfully declined Barn

that the meeting should be held with
in the borders of our sister State,
