He was l generously assisted in this work of disfigurement by numerous other lit tle and big Stills and Stillesses. Com mon expressions were, “That’s all you’re gonna gimme, Ma?” and “Aw, Ma, I could bfeat that by two pieces of chocolate (Take.’' Nothing that could be^ gotten at home was touched here, according to one gentleman. The special relief commission consisting of only six men has re duced this tax from 20 per cent, to 4 per cent. This tax should never have been put on and those in authority now have tried to correct the .evil.- *>■ We congratulate them on their admission of the mistake. x Does anyone think for one moment that Soft Drinks are more of a luxury than cosmetics? You, the consumers of Soft Drinks, are now paying one-fifth of the entire tax for general State purposes. x ■■ r ' Total tax for general purposes, exclusive of education, is $6,500,- x X x *3 : X 000.00. Estimate from Soft Drink tax $1,500,000.00. *> Who pays th%~ tax on Soft Drinks? 70 per cent, is paid by working people and children. a matter of fact they are not a 4uxury, but if they are, do you want to tax the working people and children 20 per cent, on one of the few luxuries they have? A $10,000.00 piece of real es tate or farm land is usually as-' sessed at $1,000.00 on which the State tax for general purposes is $5.50. X. If you drink two Soft Drinks per day, you pay $7.30 which is $1.80 more than a man pays who owns $10,000.00 worth of prope- erty.
