Confratulationa, Colonel.

Barnwell and Barnwell County have
always furnished their quotas of djs
tinguished sons to the #ervice of South
Carolina. The latest to win honor for
himself and his home county is Col
Harry D. Calhoun, president of the
Home Bank of Barnwell, who last
week was elected president of the S
C. State Bankers Association. The
People-Sentinel is quite sure that he
will discharge the duties of his office
in such a manner as^ll bring creddit
to himself and vindicate the confi
dence placed in him by his fellow
bankers.
Congratulations and best wishes,
Colonel!
Worthwhile Opportunities.
We wish to call attention to a letter
‘published elsewhere in this issue, from
County Superintendent of Education
Horace J. Crouch, in which he stresses
'the opportunities offered to six boys
and one girl in Barnwell County to
win a scholarship at State colleges.
He doesn’t want to see these scholar
ships go by default to boys and gifts
in the State at large. Surely there
Are enough young men and women in
this county who desire a college edu
cation with ambition enough to win
one of these free scholarships by just
a little effort.
Read Mr. Crouch’s letter, then read
the advertisements of the colleges in
this paper and make up your mind to
- win a scholarship.

Admiral McGowan, chief highway
commissioner, has ordered the opera
tors of bus lines in this State to re
duce their schedules to conform with
the speed limit in South Carolina. We
are glad to see Mr. McGowan take
this action and only wish it were pos
sible for him to regulate as easily the
•peed of all other automobile.^ rivers.
We have also noticed that the drivers
of some of these busses are “road
hogs” and force the drivers of other
automobiles to the edge of the road
to avoid a collision. We suggest that
Mr. McGowan issue a memorandum
covering this practice.
A r,oad hog is^A ^contemptible breed
of the genus homo and quite often
^ responsible for many of the acci
dents that happen on the public high
ways.

A story is going the rounds that re
cently a New Yorker purchased a
pair of shoes in a town in the Pied
mont section of this State and was
'■4
very much surprised when, in re
sponse to his inquiry as to the amount
of the tax, the merchant informed
him that there is none on shoes, they
still being considered a necessity and
not a luxury in South Carolina. The
visitor from New York had beep so
accustomed to paying taxes on his
purchases in this State that-we can
readily appreciate his surprise in
this matter.
And speaking cf taxes. The South
Carolina Gazette has compiled the
following list of taxes imposed in
this State, which it describes as “the
most complete, if not the most in
equitable and obnoxious, collection of
taxes known to man”: .
A State tax on real property.
A county tax on real property.
A city tax on real property.
A State tax on personal property.
A county tax on personal property.
A city tax on personal property.
