GREAT TRIP FOR PICKENS COUNTY AGRICULTURAL BOYS. Yo.ung Farmers Enjoy Visit to Mountains. Under the leabrhp,, of County .\gent T. A. Howen, the club boys of 'ickens county and the agricultural pupils of Prof. L.. -N. Hauknight in the Easley High school, spunt two very pleasant and profitable days at River Falls, about twenty-five miles above Greenville. The boys, seventy-five strong, wish about twenty-five parents and visit ors, left Easley at ten o'clock Tues day morning in trucks and automo biles. The county of Pickns, thru the courtesy of Superintendent Mc Kinney, furnished two trucks, the Glenwood Cotton Nlills furnished on: and Mr. Evans, a farmer in the Long Branch section, another. The cars all made good time both going and returning and experienced practical ly no trouble. River Falls furnished t splendid site for the camp. thre being a good spring from which to get water, a splendid swimming pool for the boys to go in bathing, and a large pavilion for them to sleep in. The camping quarters were located at the foot of mountains rarel'y. surl)a--ed for beau tiful scenery. F. Van Clayton, coun-ty suprin tendent of education, accompanied the party and in his usual genial manner helped to entertain the boys. At night the youngsters were taken in a body to the bank of (the river whene stories were told to them by B. O. Williams, assistant state Boys Club agent from Clemson College, Prof. Bauknight, and County Ageni Bowen. On Wednesday morning the party hiked up to view the falls There the sparkling white water fall. ing down the steep rocks for about two hundred feet was a novel sight For, although they live so near them some few of the boys had nevel climbed a mountain trail nor seen a greast water fall. Doubtless the whole crowd wished for a lounging place when they returned to their camp. Only one boy suffered the slight est pain from sickness or otherwise Furtunately this lasted for only al hour or so, and was caused fron chills due to his morning plunge int the pool. The question has often been asi ed, "Why do boys leave the farm'? Suffice it to say that the real que tion is, "When will the best bo: stop leaving the farm and go ba( thre after completing their educe tion " One answer to this is: Whe 'the people of the country have tit opportunity of enjoying wholesom recreation and take some time for th relaxation of their tired bodlies; an wvhen the boys of the farm hav' studlied their problems and hav grown into manhood with cultivate< minds and a knowledge of 'the spiri of co-operation and community (de velopment. Then we will see gooc schools and churches and homes anc r'oads an~d all modern home conv'en. :'ences. This trip was, indeed, a grSeat ex lerience for the rising farmer, of the county. It broadened their via ion and instilled into their lives a d sire to dto greater things with each oith ?r; for now they know ot her boys from the various sectionls of their county, andl no0 doubt have a strong er dlesire to know them better, andl to wvork for a greater Pickens county. Such wvork as is being done with these boys wvill mean a great deal to their futurm lives. They meet. once a month ini their respective comminun ities and (discuss ideas of' Larming under the leadership of the :-ounty agent. The boys have their own of.. ficers, who preside over the m-et ings, andl they participate in recrea tion and amusement. Often paren. attend the meetings and in every ease they go back wishing that such training ando experience had beeni theirs when they wvere young. TIruly, the boys all had a gloris time at River Falls and they will never forget it. Next year it i hopedl that a larger number of boys will be engaged in club wvork and that the trilp will even be better than) this year. Pickens county ranks high in club wvork in South Carolina, which is to say that the boys of the farms in Pickens are being trained and lead in the things which stand for progress in the development of thc rural communities.
