I Welborn on the last shot of the Civil! Wiar, I would like to add a few words' in regard to what 1 know about what happened on May 1st, 1865. I was born and raised on the ground where this last fight occurred and at this time I was about fifteen years old. About 12:00 o'clock on May 1st, about five hundred infantry, compos ed of old men forty-fives years old and boys of sixteen, came down what is known as the old Station road and stopped in a small patch of woods to, eat dinner and rest. Whib they were resting, about seventy-five to a hundred Yankee cavalry came down; the maini Greenville road and ran into our m'n, and the firing started. It ws. stated that Y:ir. It is interesting to know that the women of America are taking an act ive part in pushing the Christian edu cation movement which is being eu terprised by protestant denomi ina tions of America. . The women f. Southern Methodism are inspired by a two-fold sontithent their interest in the work of their church towards aid ing in the readjustment of world conditions on a high basis and from a sentiment that expressed their loyalty to the cherished ideals of their Southland. The South is pass ing through a testing time almost as critical as that of reconstruction days, though not so violent. Ma terialism is creeping into its fold and the only way to preserve the r eal culture and integrity of its early his tory is through Christian education. She has a seat in all the conferences an( her counsel is sought in shaping their plans. Wonan' work for Christian edu cation was coincident with christian ity itself. Christianity begins at the mother's knee and it is in the home that the foundations of life are laid. The christian home and the christian school are the only sure foundations upon which a higher civilization can be built.
