Wednesday, May 18, has been nam ed as Salvation Army Day in Picken and an intensive appeal will be mad on this day for funds for the Salvt Lion Army. This is in connection with the drive that is being made fo funds all over the country. Washington, May 4.-The house this afternoon defeated Representa tive Dominick of South Carolina In an effort to ako it impossible' for the farmers of the country, having organized a co-operative marketing association, to be checkmated by the secretary of agriculture at his pleas ure. The second section of the bill authorizing the farmers to organize provides that at any time the secre tary of agriculture is displeased with the price of agricultural products he e"nn call an investigation, and turn the evidence thus adduced over to the district attorny and secure an in junction. Mdr. )ominick, holding that the see on1d section practically nullified the purpose of the bill. moved at. amend by .-triking out this section. He was ontwitted although 98 members stood in his support. Mr. Dominick declared in hi' speech that before the United States district court could determine the merits of the issue, the lettuce and cucumbers held by the injunction from the market, would have de com posed. But his argument in face of the Republican machine, had no ap preciable weight. The farmers in the gallery, however, supported him. H. W. R. Building a concrete road extend. ing from the city limits, organizing a creamery, and the organization of a sweet potato storage house are a inw things the live people of Greer are beginning this week. Our neighbor on the north is certainly on the job, and its aggressive community spirit is worthy of emulation by other towns and cities. The commercial body there has done and is doing a most commendable wovrk, in which it is sustained by the business men of Greer. The three movements to be start ed this week are among the number of activities of a city building nature which has attracted attention throughout the state for the past year or two. Greer activity is the kind of activity which builds, cum munities into towns and towns into cities- -and we congratulate the peo ple of that little city upon their pro gressive aggressiveness.
