AKE GOSNELL TO BE TRIED IN
PICKENS COUNTY FOR
MURDER.
Circuit Judge George E. Prince
londay granted a change of venue
rom Greenvile to Pickens county for
he trial of Jgk. Gosnell, revenue
gent, indicted for the alleged mur
er of Sheriff Hendrix Rector, July 4,
919. In presenting the motion,
ounsel for the defense intioduced
n affidavit made by Gosnell fn which
3 said he could not secure a fair
nd impartial trial in Greenville, ow
rg to the fact that the sheriff, whose
uty it was to summon jurors, is a
rther of the deceased.
The case of the state against Sul
ivan, in which the defendant, Sulli
an, was indicted for the alleged mur
er of the half brother of Sheriff
ilreath, of Greenville county, al
nost thirty years ago, was cited, as
vas the decision of the supreme
ourt, upholding the lower court in
ranting a change of venue.
Solicitor Smoak, while not object
ng to a change of venue, declared
hat he had every confidence in the
furors of Greenville county and in
he sheriff. The defense replied that
o reflection on the sheriff was in
ended by the motion. The solicitor
aid the state was perfectly willing
hat the trial be transferred to Pick
ns county.
At the first trial last year of Jake
losnell for the alleged murder, a
iiistrial was ordered when the court
f general sessions jury reported that
t could not agree on a verdict.
