PEANUTS VALUABLE A
STOCK IN MOST SEC
FIELD OF PEANUTS GRO\"
eplared by the lUnited States ih part
ment of Agriculture.)
he pentit is one of the more im
portant crops grown in the South for
feeding to hogs, thousands of acres
being grown for that parpose. Few,
if any, crops will produce more pounds
of pork on an acre of land or produce
It at i lower cost per pound. A good
crop of peanuts will produce at least
-100 pounds of pork per acre, and if
the hay is harvested 'efo ire turning the
hogs Into the 1t11(h it will priactiolly
paiy the cost of growing. In addition
to the proilt on the pork, the croli
pri'oducin g cnpacity of the soil will he
materially Increased, ldue to the udli
tion of humus amd iti rogen. This is
very linipolrtant, as iiinmehl of tlie la i
in the peanut growing sections is de
fieient in hot h. By Iim aking.i succe'ssive
plan tings of penniut s at' inltervals of 15
to 30 dhays it is possible in most see
lions of the South to have pennuts
nvilable fur the hogs from millsum
tier until the end1 of November. In
pasturing hogs on lennuts it is best to
confine them to small arens by using
portable fences, rather than to let
them have the run of the whole field.
Plant Between Corn Rows.
In some sections of the Southern
states the pennut is planted between
the rows of corn, either at the tiine
the corn is planted or at the lnst cul
Iivation. After the corn is harvested
cattle are turned in to cot the fodder
and peanut tolls. Ilogs are then turn
ed in to eat the peniuts. In this way
the stubble and roots of the peanuts
supply humus, and most of the nitro
gen stored in the nodules on the roots
is left in the soil.
Ilogs fattened exclusively on peanuts
do not yield i very desiroble grade of
ment and lard, as the ment is soft and
the lord ily. This can he renedied
to a large extent, however, by feeding
corn and other feeds along with the
peanuts.
In addition to growing peanuts to be
fed in the field, the drop ann he cured
and stored in horns or sheds for win
ter feeding. The entire plant is a very
valuable feed for nearly all classes of
live stock. Peanut hay, consisting of
the entire pinnlt after the nuts are re
moved, has a much higher feeding
value than the grass hays and ihout
the same value as Clover' lnay. The
av'ernge ylild of peanut hoy is about
two-thirds of a toni per uacre. With
2,000,0)00 neres-~ of pemu utts, the esti
mated oerenge for 191'7, there wouldl

peanut hay with a value of at least
$20,4100,000.
The peanut Is especially valuable as
a1 crop to be grown for feed in the
drier sections of the Southwest, where
it is Impossible to grow corn to advan
tage. Pennuts will withstand drought
better than most farmn crop(, In 501me
regions where corn will not produce
five huahels per aere, pefnnuts have
proved .'ery satisfactory. The crop is
of value also on land carrying it consid
erable p'r(etiiage of alkali.

the sa~ne purpose. With the short
ni' of feeds ligh in protein the de
nTllnd for pen nut meal at ia good price
will prohnhly exceed the supply. It
is especially viu-ille for (1y eattle
and hogs and has been used to furnish
a large percentage of the protein In
a home-mixed horse feed. In fact,
one large farmer has been using pein
numt meal for several years for feeding
w'or]k horses and clins that it is the
ole:bepest prot ein feed he has ever used.
It vin he 1used1 in (tulle larre (iunn
tity in connt4 Ption ith other feeds
withotli injirious effects. When fed
to hogs pe:nnut meal does not produce
soft pork, 1ad for this reason it is
preferable to raw n'a nuts.
Shells for Feed.
i'ennut shells, which acemnulate in
large uantitles at cleaning :111am shell
ing faetories, are solmetinwls groumi
with low-gradle peninuls andt(1 sold for
feed. The shells, however, have prae
tienul'y no feeding value, its they con
sist largely of crude fiber.
All peanut feeds should be sold on
the basis of their protein, fat, and car
bohydrate content rather than on the
ton basis. For example, 750 pounds
of meal made from shelled peanuts has
practieally the s5imenc feeding value as
1.350 pounds of meal pinde from ui1n
51)hlled nuts. These amounts represent
the meal left as a by-product from pen
nut (hi ma11nufnetuired from 11 tonl oif
farmers' stock Spanish pennuts. Deal
irs selling pennlult meal should show
(4n the 11abe(l whether it Is mamde from
shelled or unshelled nuts ; in finet, this
Is required by lawv In some stntes.
