T1hirty-five colored men of Pickens county have been notilied by the Pick ens local board to appear in Pickens at .2 o'clock p. mn,, June 20, and thirty of them will be sent to Camp Jackson to enter the army June 21. Seventy seven white men will also be sent next week. Building for Central--Locals Central is sun to have a new brick post office building. The dirt was bro ken last week for the foundation. It is to be erected between the old post office and the Bunk of Central and is to be a two story building with.ofices upstairs. J. L. Carson, Central's hustling and efficient contractor, is to do the work. Most of the brick are on the ground and we expect soon to see Uncle Sam's business in the new building. J. N. Morgan is to have the building erected. Those of the soldier and sailor visitors to Central the past week were Marvin Lawrence, Edgar Martin, Paul Duckett, Henry King, Clement Kelley and S. W. Clayton, of the army and F. Van Clay ton of the navy. II. E. Seaborn, chairman of this dis trict of the War Savings Stamp cam paign, is doing excellent work. He has already sold several hundred dollars worth of stamps himself, and at the dlose of the campaign we expect to hear Mr. Seaborn make a good report, for he has been an eflicient and untiring vorker in the Liberty Bonds and Red gross campaigns. c 0 -BUY W. My Dear Mother:-Your letter dated April 27 came today and I was sure glad to hear from you, for your last letter as a little discouraging, but this one smoothed things over in good shape. 1 cnew it would turn out this way because you have always been my friend in cv rything else and I knew you would he his. We are now allowed to tell the folks t home where we are located in France. Ve are now in Nantes about 40 miles rom the coast. It is a city of about 00,000 people, I think; looks very much ike Charleston in some respects, espe ially the buildings; they are all very ld, some of them are actually falling own from age. The streets are very arrow, ,all paved with cobblestones; Mme places there are no sidewalks; all re very narrow-from two to three yet wide in most places. The funniest thing I see is the wood n shoes worn by the poor class of peo le, just made of a chunck of wood and iok like little canoes. The people here rink wine just as the people in Amer a do coffee or milk. Ice cream is un nown; haven't seen any since I left ae states; no soda fountains-nothing ut wine rooms and they are about ev ry other door. Our barracks here are fine, have good eds, the buildings are built of concrete nd cement floors, have a firstclass bath 'ith shower baths, hot and cold water, 'ur grub is good enough, I guess it is a good as could be expected. The nearest I have been to church is ght now. There is a bunch of Negro -oops here and one of them is a preach r, so they are having preaching in the less hall. Of course it can be heard II over the camp and then some. The Cason I haven't been to church is that can't understand anything they say; owever, it might do me good if I would o and just look on. I have a pretty ard time "getting by" here, but a lot f fun. Can't even say "howdy" to ne when I pass them on the street-I imply wave my hand and grunt. I haven't heard from any one but you nd my girl since I came here. Got our letter and hers the same day. Did he write to you? In an old letter she Grote me at Camp Merritt, N. J., said he was going to write you. The letter allowed me over as I only stayed in amp Merritt two days. I have written all I can think of, so ere's hoping that you and all the rest re well and that I will hear from you ften. Don't worry about me because m going to stayistraight, also I'm >ming back.
