Presentment of Grand Jury
We, the grand jury, have passed on
all bills handed us by the solicitor and
beg leave to make this, our tinal pre
sentment for the June term of court,
1918.
Several cornplaints have reached us
from the towns. and country that the
stores and places of public amusement
fail to observe the Sunday laws, and
also to be selling extracts which are
being used as a beverage. We would
urge that the sheriff and rural police
see that this menace, both in town and
country, be immediately stopped.
We recornmend that the court take
immediate action to enforce the drain
age laws, and especially as to condi
tions on South Saluda river.
Owing to the scarcity oi labor, and
also for the good of the county at large,
we recomnrend that the sheriff, rural
poliCernen, .nd all Cxceutive oflicers
look (:los lv into the eniforcerneun t of
the iaws on Our statute books in regard

To the Democratic Voters of
Pickens County
After first thanking you for the hand
some vote you gave me four years ago,
(I received I,528 votes and never came
out until about two weeks before the
election,) 1 an ,gain before you as a
candidate for the same office, Probate
Judge.
I was burn and raised in Pickens coun
ty, have never lived anywhere else, and
like the crippled man of old who had
lain by the pool of Bethesda for thirty
and eight years waiting to be put in the
water when the angel would con and
trouble the water in order that he might
be healed, I have sat by the p)ool of (ip
portunity ever since I started out to
make my way in this world, which has
been about 22 years, thinking maybe
the people of my native county an' peo
pie who have known me all rny iife
would help rme in the pool at the right
time when the water was troubled. but
like the crippled man of' old, not being
able: to get in of rny own accord, some
one else has stepped in ahead of ine.
As 1 am now 48 years old I feli that

discharge the duties of th<. office to
which I aspire, All 1 ask is for the vo
ters of 'ickens county to give meu a
ehan<e. I v ill not be ashamed to come
before them on riy record after that.
I hope to be able to mtleet every voter
in the county at the county campaign
meetings where, if it is the Lord's will,
I hope to more fully present my claims.
I an in this race to win and 1 want my
friends to help mne. 1 expect to go in
with elean hands and corne nut the sarne
way. I had rather go down in defeat
than be elected by dirty trick s.
