Dr.. L. T. Shirley
Dr. L. T. Shirley, one of the most
lprominent physicians in upper South
Carolina, died November 7th, at his
residence in Central S. C
He was born in AIbeville county and
was fifty-eight years of age, the Satur
day following his death being his birth
day and also the twenty-fifth annivers
ary of his wedding day.
Dr. Shirley was a man of rare traits
mind conscientious character. He will
be more widely missed than any one
fnan in his community.
Besides the regard of his many friends
and patients, he was held in highest
esteem by his brethren of the medical
fraternity, many of them visiting him
in his last hours and a number being
present at his funeral.
His sickness was brief; suffering a
rtroke of paralysis October 30th, he
rived but one week. For a number of
years Dr. Shirley had been a faithful
member of the Baptist church at Con
I ral.
The funeral was conducted by Rev.
'F. C. O'Dell of Anderson, assisted by
ministers from the Baptist. Wesloyan
and Presbyterian churches. It was co
ncilental that Rev. Mr. O'Dell had
officiated at )r. Shirley's marriage just
twenty-five years ago
The large attendance at the funeral
wad also the many exquisite floral
tributes attested the friendship in which
se was held.
Dr. Shirley's family consists of his
wife, who was Miss Lucia Gaines, his
eklest son, Vernon Shirley nolw at Camp
Jackson, Columbia; Harvey and Lucian
Shirley, and Misses Stacey, Helen and
ina Shirley of Central. His brothers
are James Shirley of Anderson, and II.
('. Shirley of Liberty, S. C.
His loved ones do not feel as if they
hand lost him, for:
Death will have rainbows round it, seen
Through resignation's tears,
f tranquil Hope but trims her lamp
At the eternal years,"
-A FAMILIAn 1RlusNI.
Mrs. Robertson
One of the saddest funerals the writer
as ever witnessed was that of Mrs.
ucy Ada Gillespie ltobertson, of Salem,
S. C. As we beheld the two little
rnotherless children and the disconsolate
husband, as well as the other sorrowing
)mes, we found our own eyes filled with
tears and our tongue 'mle scarcely pro
nounce the words of , . funeral service.
She was born on the I th day of March
n the year 1852, and t 'nt to live with
rod and the holy angels on the morning
f the 1.4th of October of this year.
She left us in the prime of life. She
was just thirty-five yeatrs, six months
n.id twenty dlays ofi age.
She was converted at Twelve Mile
ampi ground, at the tender' age of
even( .ears. She gave her hear t to God
adjoimed the church under the preach
:ng of Brother 'T. C. O'Dell, who was
hecr presiding elder at the time of her
leath. She chose teaching as her life's
work, and t auight for several years. She
'-eemed to be very successful in this
work, but on A pril 28, 1910, ehe gave it
-19 for the purpose of making a real
home.
She wans married on the above dlate to
ames Alexander Rtobertson of Salem,
-C. They both stvmed to be ats happy
af two sympathetic people could be.
I'wo children were horn to them, Laura
moteree.av
We cannot undecrstand why the Lord
n hlis wisdom sawv fit to call her away
from her husband andI children, but we
bow submissively and look forward to1
the meetin the heavenly land.
She diedl almost suddenly, but her
daily life and walk gave the best proof
that she was ready to go or reat y to
stas as her Lord should direct. We
'aitoher to rest in the Pickens cemeter~y
wvhich is only a short distance from her'
girlhood home, where her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. J, M. 9ii1Wipje still live. She lef t
a husband flid twc (thikirer, also her
father. and m'>ther and at brother arnd
two sisters, Mrs. It. B. Byars, of Ea:s
ley, S C., and Miss Olive Gillespie, of
Pickens, S. .,to mourn her loss.
She wvas a sister of Brother Leo 1).
Gillespie, of the Upper South Carolina
conference. Brother H-odges, pastor at
Pickens, assisted in condIucting the
funeral serviees.
The church will feel the loss as well
as a host of sorrowing friends.
Brother Robertson is a stewvard in the
Salem church to which they movedi or
November 5, 1911, when the church wai
first organizedl.
We trust the good Lord to care lot
the lovedi ones behindl.

Pickens county officers destroyed a
large illicit distillery Saturday night.
It was situated on an island in Saluda
iiver and the officers had to wade thru
freezing water to get to it. Five men
were at work at the still, but four of
them escaped in a boat, one being
caught. Five gallons of whiskey was
also captured here.
