at "rond Limestone" Has Done For Others Will Do For You KNOXVILLE, TENN., August 15, 1917. American Ballast Company, Knoville, Tennessee. . Gentlemen: - Last fall I prepared five acres of land for alfalfa, using four tons of Ground Limestone per acre. After preparing the land I decided to put it in wheat, and this summer I harvested and threshed an average of forty bushels to the acre off these five acres. I am a firm believer in Ground Limestone for wheat and other grains, as. well as clovers and alfalfa. Very truly yours, (Signed). R. L. PETERS. 04 Story of Thomas Eskew's Wheat ANDERSON COUNTY, S. C. Land plowed ten inches deep last summer with tractor and team. - Land broadcasted in stable manure, 300 pounds acid phosphate and cotton seed meal and two tons Mascot Ground Limestone per acre applied. Land seeded to wheat in November, one bushel NO of Tennessee blue star wheat per acre being drilled in. Wheat harvested June 15 with yield of 143 bushels on 4% acres, or a yield of 32 bushels per acre. In spring wheat had suffered about 10 per cent damage by hail or average would have been about 35 or 36 bushels per acre. GREENVILLE, S. C., August 7, 1917. American Ballast Company, Knoxville, Tennessee. Gentlemen: I am a Limestone enthusiast. To visit my farm now arnd observe the Sdifference in cowpeas, where, with only a terace dividing, Limestone was used Sand where it was not would convince the most skeptical that Limestone is the most profitable kind of fertilizer for our loam and clay lands, ahd especially so -for legminous crops. md n ude n uhl ntetrears I used three tons Mascot Ground Limestone per acre on three acres, planted * towhet, lst allandYours very truly, (Signed) W. It anded first prize, as was eniinently roper. The Pickens Sentinel gives it ublication. It isn't very long, it is tot only interesting but valuable. It's he only history of "The State of ickens" of which we know. Some acts in it will not be easily found lsewhere. How Joe Frank Freeman anie to write it is not stated, but the ubject is a most excellent one. South Jarolinians pride themselves on the State's historic past, but they know nighty little about it in the way of acts. Still less they know about the istory of their county. Such studies is this ought to be made in the chools generally. Pickens has a most )icturesque and romantic record, yet t's a good bet that not many Pick mnsites could write three hundred vords of actual fact about its annals. f any schoolboy or girl in Greenville Jounty or any other county in this ection writes a short history of his )r her county, the News would be )leased to publish it. Why He Wrote It Editor of' The Sentinel: In a very avorable editorial comment in the areenville News of September 22 atten :ion is called to the article published in t recent issue of your paper- "Pickens Jounty from Colonial Times." The news says "Why Joe Frank Freeman wrote this essay we do not know." Among the objects of the organiza tion of the United Daughters of Con federacy as expressed in its constitution tre the following: Educational* and listorical, to preserve material for truthful history, etc. In order to en .ourage this study the local chapter of the U.D.C. offers yearly a medal to the sigh school student of the Pickens school for the best essay on a given subject. Many good papers have been written, and the medal was won this year by Joe Frank Freeman. This very xcellent article has been filed among the valuable papers of the chapter and vill be sent to the state historian for )reservation among its archives. , FRANCES H. MAULDIN, Pres.
