GOLDEN TEXT--Fear not; I am h first and the last, and the living one; an I was 4ead, and behold, I am alive to evermore.-Rev. 1:17, 18. The lesson committee have depufi ed, seemingly, a long way from aiy thing like chronological order. Paiu had nothing to do with the writing o the Revelation, yet this lesson illus trates the pre-eminence which Jeou Christ had in the mind and labors o the great apostle (Col. 1:18). 1. IntroductIon. (vv. 1-3.) We wo'-li suggest that all Bible students ant teachers, if possible, read the introd-ic tion to the Book of Revelation in S -o field's Reference Bible. The bool proper is "The Revelation of Jesut Christ." John, the beloved disciple who wrote the Gospel and Epistles 'was the one who saw the visions ve corded therein. Many of the tkng are historical, others are propheticall; set forth. The latter are "shortly t come to pass." (See also II Peter 8;8. John tells not only what God said bu what he himself eaw. The late Dw:to Brooks of St. L1ouis oiitted this ',ol from his study for many years -*.ti he saw the comments recorded in vers 3. The time of the writing of thi book has variously been stated as from A. D. 60 to A. D. 90; the writer wa certainly John the Beloved. The plic of writing was the island of Patmo in the Aegean sea, not far from Ephe sus. The real author, however, i Jesus Christ, the Son of God. ii. Salutation (vv. 4-8). "The sers ant of Jesus who records his messag was John, and the message was to b to "the seven churches which ar In Asia ;" that Is, the western portio: of Asia Minor, of which Ephesus o: the Aegean sea was the principal city These churches are definitely nanied i verse 11. There is good reason t think that these churches represente the seven successive epochs of chure history. If so, no age is exclusivel Ecphesian, or Philadelphian, or Laod cean. The grace, favor, loving kin ness, is a free gift from Christ, wh Is here giving a threefold title, nam ly: First begotten from the dead, wI ness and prince. Ill. Vision (vv. 0-18). What Joli saw on the Isle of Patmos he was I write upon a parchment roll and sen it to the seven churches, each o which needed a message. Under th figure of seven candlesticks are en merated seven churches. Into the mids of these churches, actually present i them, is one like unto the Son of Mai (See also Matthew 189:20.) Like a hit man being, JTesus was, but now clothe with the garment of his eternal glory gi rdled about wilth the girdle worni b prlests and~i kings, a symbllol of hi power and~ st rengthi (Isaiaih 11 :5 ; Epi G :14i). JTohn had en joyedl a tender intimacy with the Lori dlurirng his earthly life and yet he wa. strI(eken dlown with the overpowerin; majlesty and glory which had been re vealed. Now he realized, as perhap: never before, the significance of thi ever-livIng Christ, end he is hereb: sp~eeifically commanded to recordl thi; vision as i--e had seen it and1 thme mes sages, which the Lord had for th< churches. The word mystery (v. 20: has reference to something which ha; hitherto b~een hidden to men anti wvhicl is now abouit to b~e revealed. Thb revelation was to these churches, anm it Is to us also. Jesus is not a muero vision but hi is a living reality, unveiled for the time from the unseen. Jesus is a living fact which we air to comimunicaite to men. The sevem stars (v. 20) arc messages in his owi right hand. The churches are the lamp standse Christ himself is the light, the im (v. 16). The imessages John is commanded ti deliver have a four-fold applcation (1: to the churches actually addressed, bu which have long since passed away (2) to all churches in all times, adl monishing themi to discover their trin spiritual state; (3) to individuals, "h< that hauth an ear," that they shall clain the promises made "to him that over cometh" anid (4) they are prophetie o the different pihases of spiituaml his tory, following tihe days of John, thu writer, (a) Ileginning; (b) persectiton (c) wvorldliness; (d) priestly form ahism ; (e) reformation ; (f) testi mony in the word and the name. 59 YEARS OLD HALE AND HARDY And Praises Cardul, Which She Says Pulled Her Through A Most Dangerous Period.
