After the usual social hour a contest followed after which a delightful sweet course was served by Misses Floy Herd and Bernice Carey. M.Maul din of Piciens and is a most prominent and popular lady. Many friends are of fering congratulations. Sheriff Roark left last week for Pitts burg, Pa., to bring back here Ossie 4 Young, colored. Young killed another negro at Calhoun about two years ago - and escaped. He recently went north ) with a large number of other negroes and the Pittsburg officers pick ed him 4 up and notified the Pickens sheriff. ) Mrs. J. E. Boggs and Miss Inez Mor ria attenned the marriage of Clifford 3 Lewis and Miss Louise Newman at Co lumbia Tuesday. Mr. Lewis is a son of Mr. and Mrs. B. Lewis of Easley,' but is well,known in Pickens, where he was ' reared. He has been living for the past 'two years at Lockhart, where he holds a responsible position. Frank Peterson and J'ohn Gary, both colored, staged a private battle at the) Srock quarry between Easley and Liber - ty Saturday aftb-rnoon and after both ~ had emptied their pistols at each other and the smoke cleared away it was ~ found that John was shot in the foot, 5 but not seriously hurt. Messrs. J. K. Lathem and Geore H. 3 Reeves of Pickens were members of the jury which convicted Editor V. B.A Cheshire of the Anderson Tribune at 3 Greenwood last week. Mr. Cheshire was charged with sending "filthy" 3 readin matter thru the mails. Argu- 3 ment for a new trial was overruled and the defendant was sentenced to serve three months in the Oconee jail or pay 3 a fine of $200. He paid the fine. Mr. ~ Cheshire was represented by ex-Gover -' nor Blease, Congressman-elect D~omi- 3 nick and former U. S. District Attorney Cochran. An unusual distilling outfit was dis covered, by offh 'ers near Table Roek Monday. Instead of the usual sheet 3 iron boiler and furnace the outfit hada boiler which resembled a steam engine boiler and no furnace was necessary. 3 The officers say it is the first one of its kind they ever saw and seems to have been made for this special purpose. It : is made out of steel and could not be (e. stroyed with the implements the officers ' had.
