Sumter.-Sumter county's Inade tuate and unsanitary jail is to be re placed by a now jail to cost about $26,000 and built in conformity with modern humanitarian ideas about the housing of prisoners. The present jail was considored one or tie worst in the state by the secretaries of the state board of charities and corrections on account of structural defects in it pre cluding the possibility of keeping it in a sanitary condition and of classi fying the pri.9oner. The state board of charitios and corrections recom mended last August the erection of a now jail. The local committee of visi tor" ap)pointed by the board in Sumter county has co-operated with the county vomminsioners and the legisla tive delegation to get the recommen datIon Put. Into effect. United States department of agriculture; general discussion; busi ness session. Sumter Farmers Hear Long. Sumter.-At a meeting of farmers and business men in the court house Dr. W. W. Long, head of the farm ex tension work in this state, was the chief speaker. Dr. Long made an in teresting talk on how the farmers might make and save their own ferti lizers now that the price of commer cial fertilizers was beyond reach of most farmers. He stated that there were four things that the farmers must learn before the South could become pros perous under present conditions: The farmer mdust learn to grow crops without the use of commercial fer tilizers; a proper system of marketing must be devised; there must be de velopment in the live stock industry in preparation for the coming of the boll weevil and agriculture must be taught in the rural schools by traine agriculturists. Hydrick For Supreme Court. Spartanburg..-Judge D. E. Hydrick of the supreme bench of South Caro lina will in all probability be pra sented for appointment to the United States supreme bench as successor to tehi ate Mr. Justice Lamar of Georgia, according to information gained hern. Judge Hydrick's residence is in Spar tanburg and he has been a member of the supreme court for the last five years. It is undecrstood that the Spartanburg delegation to the legis lature will support him for that posi tion and the opinion is expressed that he will have the indorsement of the senate and house and th3 South Carolina delegation in congress.
