a headline. Well, South Africa has
nothing on SouthCarolina in that line.
Our Senator Ben says that Mr.Bryan
has "lost his poise." That's a great
deal better than having no poise to lose.
The given name of the manager of
the U. of S. C. football team is Pick
ens. We'll wager the gentleman is
alright.
-Mr. Ford says "every nation in the
world will applaud when the men are
brought from the trenches." They
sure wvill, Henry.
George Fitch says the bills for Janu
ary will have tails on them like comets.

Pickens county and other counties and
other states, trying to carry sinshine
and good cheer to the -hearts and homes
of our readers; trying to encourage all
that is good and right and condemn all
that is wrong. Mistakes.' we have
doubtless made, and. if we continue to
exist we will doubtless make more, for
dead people are the only ones who make
no mistakes. But our intention is to
help you all in any good work.
Here is our hand in trying to make
Pickens county-as it can be made-the
very garden spot of the state., We
already have the name of being the,
most law-abiding, law-enforcing county
In the state. Such a name we feel
proud of and such a name we will strive
to maintain.
To the farmers, ministers, doctors,
lawyers, merchants, bankers, black
smiths, corporations, maiufacturers,
editors, correspondents, teachers, and
all others not mentioned by name, we
wish a happy and prosperous New
Year.
A card from Editor Wallace of the
Dewberry Observer wishes us 866 days
of happiness and love during 1916, and
we appreciate it a whole lot. Good
friend, we never allow anyone to outdo
us in a thing of this kind, so we wish
you 866 days of the same, unalloyed
and not tinged.
We are sad that we have so many
death notices to publish this week.
There are no less than eight, and a
perusal of the notices will show that
death is no respecter of persons, but
calls on the young, the old and the
middle-aged, some with warning and
some without. No one can tell when
he is going to be called, but there is
one thing sure: you are going to be
called.

December 31 was rebeived in the morn
ing mail. I am sending the $1 which
you so politely request. Mark me up
for 1916. If this newspaper is worth a
dollar to Pickens county people, it is
worth two dollars to me. Besides get-,
ting the home news, I see in it a good I
deal of other interesting matter. For I

homefolks. The tequirements of my

The books for the colloctloi of State and
County taxes will be open from October 16,
1015, to December 31. 1915.
Those who prefer to do bo can pay in Janu.
ary, 1916, with I per cent additional. Those
wno prefer paying in February, 1916, can do so
with 2 per cent additional. Those who prefer
paying in March, 1910, to the 15th of said month
can do so by paying an additional 7 per cent.
After said dato the books will close.
N. li.-Taxpayers owning property or paying
taxes for others will please ask for tax receipt
in each township or special school district in
which he or they may own property. This is
very important, as there are so many school
districts. Those who do not wish to come to
the ollice can write me, not later than the 20th
of December, and I will furnish them wit h the
amount due and they can pay me by check,
money order or registered mail. If stamps are
sent do not send above 2-cent denomination, as
I can not use them. 'lease do not serd me cash
without registering sane, as it is liable to get
lost; if sent otherwise It nmust be at sendcr's
risk.
