night a negro" man entered:thru a win
dow into the sleeping room of two
young ladies in Easley while they were
sleeping. He attempted to choke one
of them, but she managed to scream,
awaking others in the house. The oth
er young lady came to her roommate's
assistance anid the negro jumped thru
the window and ran. His evident pur
pose was not .accomplished. He suc
ceeded, -however, in making his get
- away and eluded the search of citizens
ahd officers-who looked for him the bal
once of the night and most of Sunday.
The Easley correspondent of the
Greenville News says the facts in the
case areas follows:
"In making his escape from the resi
dence Saturday night the fleeing person
was seen sto fall over a large log on the
edge of the sidewalk. Here he also lost
one of his shoes, which was found by
one of the officers working on the case.
Hamilton is an employe of the oil mill,
and'this shoe which was found had cot
ton seed hulls in it. The make of the
shoe was a Crossett and was identified
as one which had been purchased by
Hamilton about a month ago. Hamil
ton had a -sore on his foot and this shoe
which was found had a hole split in it,

the sore. Hamilton failed to appear at
the oil mill Monday morning and sent
word thet he had the mumps. The of
ficers, in view of all other circumstances,
carried a physician to Hamilton's house,
whern an examination disclosed the fact
that he had no mumps, but that his
knees were freshly skinned and badly
swollen. Minor scratches were also
found on his face."
'The citizens of Easley were greatly
-nraged over the affair and a lynching
o:as feared, but Governor Manning was
called over the phone and promised a
special term of court to try the negro.
)n the meantime the sheriff had slipped
the negro away to Anderson from where
he took him to Columbia.
It is reported that a negro girl was
heard to make some slighting remark
sbout the young white lady who was at
tacked and that the negro girl and all
her people were given a short titne to
eave town or suffer the consequences.
They left.
