GOLDEN TEXT-Hitherto hath Jeho. ,ah helped me.-I Samuel 7:12 R. V. Having prepared a "guilt offering," :4-9, the Philistines started the ark >ack towards Shiloh. As a punish nent for their sacrilege and perhaps or their boastful pride, God punishes he men of Beth-Shemesh and finally he ark finds rest in the house of Lbinadab, 6:16-21, 7:1, 2. For 20 rears Israel was under discipline in )ondage, v. 2. I. "And Samuel spake . . . say ng," vv. 3.8. It is possible that at imes Samuel was a fugitive, but that ie was praying, teaching and preach ng "the word of Jehovah" we are as lured. At last Israel was "drawn to rether," v. 2 R. V. margin. When Israel tdopted Ashtaroth and the "strange ;ods" they possibly did so with no hought of forsaking Jehovah, but ,ather with the idea of "enrinching' heir worship. Such liberality, such a 'ederation of religions is weakening to he cause of faith, Matt. 6:24, I John 1:15, James, 4:4. Samuel might be walled "narrow," but his exhortation tc [srael that they return to the love tnd worship of Jehovah, to the obedi mce of his laws with whole-souled de rotion, was the first, and the most es Bential requisite to their freedom. Is. ,ael's response (v. 4) meant not alone self-denial, but a revolt against the Philistines. This meant also the giv ng up of amusements and profits which night accompany such worship. The ;vord "heart" includes the will, affec lions, motives and powers of soul, qot merely a surface emotion, but a leep change of heart and character. :t is sad to recall that this was a *eformation, not a regeneration (ch. 1:8), but such Is the history of an motional reformation. Having thus roperly approached God, Samuel ~ried for Israel, and "the Lord heard lim," John 17:9. In the midst of this he Philistines gave battle (v. 10) ~ven as Satan often makes his jercest assaults upon us inl the midst f our holiest exercises. God "thun lered with a great voice," v. 11, marg., aringing discomfiture and fear to the inemy, I John 5:14. The Heart of the Lesson. This les ion is a great revelation of the power md effectiveness of intercessory Jrayer. "Moses and Aaron among his ,riests, and Samuel anmong them thai ~all upon his name," Ps. 99:.6, seems o0 place Samuel at the head of Is' ael's intercessors even as Moses and a.aron led the prophet priests. Prayer for others is not only a duty, ut a privilege and io:: as wc'i Too few Christians are interceding ~or others. The sincere prayer for ,thers is inevitably followed up by ervice for others, even as Samuel's prayer was followed by his service ludging Israel. This lesson also emphasizes the aeed of appreciation of God's mer yies.
