Read the advertisement of Heath-Bruce-Morrow Co. in this paper. Furman James and Coleman Caudle escaped from the Pickens county chaingang Saturday eve and up to this time have not been caught. The camp at present is on Crow Creek. Caudle was convicted of house breaking and larceny at the February, 1914, term of court and sentenced to serve three years. James was convicted of the same charge at the same term and sentenced to serve two and one-half years. 100 Per Cent Attend ance at Mill School .For many. year; the ayerage school attendance in :gickens. cunfy has been veiy 'T6wv,''bi1 for the past two years has been increasing, and last week Supt. Hallum received the best report on that line that has ever been sent to his office. The report was from Prof. Walter W. Benson, superintend ent of the Easley schools, and a part of it is as follows: "I was over at the Easley Mill school yesterday. I find that- they have had 100 per cent attend ance for the months of Novem ber and December. I think this is a remarkable record." Who is it says the mill children do not go to school when given the chance? This school needs an other acher and an effort will be made to get another one. Pickens is steadily making progress in all lines of educa tional work. -Homer Garrick Dead Homer Garrick aged 20 years and one month died at the home of his father, Jan. 14th, after a short illness of heart dropsy. He had been in bad health for several years. Tho his death' was unexpected at the time. He leaves a father, three sis ters a nd t wo brothers. His mother preceded .him e~ the ~rave seyer...T ago. R. T. Hallum of Pickens Honored R. T. Hallum, superintendent of education of Pickens county, was elected president of the As sociation of County Superintend ents of Education which met in Columbia last week. This is the highest honor the association can pay one of its members and shows the confidence the super intendents have in Mr. Hallum. The people of Pickens county are proud that their superintend ent has been given this honor and know he deserves it. Prof. Hallum has returned from the meeting and reports one of the best sessions in its his tory. Twenty - nine counties were represented. School legis lation was discussed and Mr. Eiallum is confident that the leg islature will pass a local option compulsory education bill this sessiqn. "Portland Ned" Convicted inN.C. James Johnson, alias "Port land Ned," who was pardoned from the South Carolina peni tentiary by Gov. Blease and who is said to have escaped from Blease's office while Federal of ficers were waiting to return him to North Carolina for trial on the charge of robbing post offices in North Carolina, has been captured and was last week convicted in, Federal court at Ral , N.Qg of robbing two ps es anisentenced to serve 'sev rsirp seA rs irthe Federal prison af A na. The U. S. army's larvest gun, which was recently built for de fense of the Panama canal, and which is capable of throwing a 2,400-pound shell 21 ritiles, is on its way to the canal..
