Colored Cutting Affair
A cutting scrape with serious
results occurred at Griffin Eben
ezer church last Sunday when
Bob Miles carved up Hayes Hal
lum. The affair was an after
math of the preaching service.
The trouble started when Hal
lum used some rough language
to the girls who were talking to
Miles. Hallum hit him with a
bottle. then Miles proceeded to
cut him up with a pocket knife.
Hallum received several cuts
about the face and 1'eck, one of
which came near severing the
jugular vein.
Miles plead guilty in mayor' s
court Monday and was fined
$31.70. ____ ___

Mr. Mc~ravey Explains
Mr. Editor:-J u s t another
word and I am through. Last
week in my denunciation of
parties who started and circu
lated false reports on me, I en
grossed my article in strong and
very bitter words, and while I
:neant it all, I am sorry not to
have used more mild and modest
language. .I intended the ar
ticle entirely for the guilty par
ties, whoever they may be, and
am sure they understood it that
way. God knows no offense to
any of my friends or any one
else not connected with the re
ports referred to, was intended.
Of course it was my enemies
and not my friends who were
so unkind as to do me this great
injustice. I was so indignant
that hothing short of what I
wrote would have expressed my
feeling at the time.
I could not let such reports go
over the county undisputed is
why I came out as I did. I feel
sure that they went out from
about Easley and were started
only by my bitter enemies and
the good people have nothing to
do with it, therefore. I do not
credit them to any other section
or community, or to anybody
else. I have suffered more or
less slander ever since I first en
tered public life and it must
stop. Being of a very nervous
temperament, things of this
kind affect me greatly, else the.
phraseology of my letter last
week, would have been in some
what different language but
meaning as much.
I beg that my friends will not
judge me hastily but wait until
they know the truth. My rec
ord in public life is the property
of the public, but false reports
of a private nature cut deep.
Respectfully,
E. P. McCravey.
Eale. S. C. July 14.
