The Sentinel is not responsible
for the views of its corres
pondents.
In a few weeks our subscrip
tion list will be placed on a cash
in-advance basis.
There are several reasons why
we will make this change, chief
of them being that we cannot
profitably publish the paper for
-one dollar a year on time..
We are sure that not one of
our subscribers wants us to lose
money publishing The Sentinel,
and we do not want to lose a
subscriber by this change.
A great many of our subscri
bers now pay in advance, and it
is better for both The Sentinel
and the subscribers.
"Hell" seems-to be Governor
Blease's favorite word.
However, Raine, the Memphis
bank wrecker, does not put the
blame for his downfall on his
wife, or someone else's wife.

Tillman and McLaurin shook
.hands in Columbia last week;
Blease and Grace shook hands
- Charleston Thursday night,
and it snowed all' over South
Carolina the nexT day.
It is every man's duty to him
mily, to his busi
ness, to buy where he can buy
cheapest, to spend bis dollar
where it will bring him the big
gest value in the goods he buys.
A man who recognizes these
truths -or a woman -should
trade with those merchants who
advertise in The Sentinel.
Lumbeiing is the second most
important industry in South
Carolina. . The value of its pro
ducts is not less than $15,000,000
annually. Of this sum, about
$3,000,000 represents the value of
th3 timber before it is cu h
rem~ainder, apprcsi:e> K12,
00.000. is the cost of manufac
ture, whichi goes proecirly in
wage~s to the cmity. This
industry employs over 15,000
wage earners, many of whom
are skilled laborers.
Government secret seryice of
ficers discovered a counterfeiting
plant -in ful! operation in the
venitentiary of Missouri some
time ago. It was being operated
by a man sent up for five years
for fore'ery. He was a plumber
and was employed at that trade
in the prison. That's a queer
place to look for the making of
the "queer." but Uncle Sam
generally finds them, no matter
where located. A similar plant
was also unearthed in the base
ment of a church in Nebraska.
A great deal has been said by
the newspapers of the country
about the profit-sharing plan re
cently inaugurated by the Ford
Automoble company, of Detroit,
Mich It is a radical departure,
of course, but nevertheless is
wholly compatible with sound
business policy and prosperity.
Mr. Ford is a firm believer in the
theory that justice, like charity,
ought to begin at home. In his
announcement he explains that,
~n the~ company's opinion, labor
is not getting the return it is en
titled to under the ordinary wage
system. He believes it should
get its fair share of the dividends
or profits. An eight-hour day is
certainly an improvement on the
sactimonious welfare schemes
which have been widely her ald
ed at different times as a panacea
for industrial unrest.
