sun strikes it. On every table figures
a red lacquer tray. covered with ever

Smons, chestnuts, dried sardines and
t herring root; all these dishes possess

meal is the start~ of the festivities,
r vhich are continued for 16 days, busi
ness being almost entirely suspended
for the first week of the year.
Forming Resolutions.
VNew -Year invokes shades of the
good resolutions of the past. Ah!
these "what might have beens" are a
source of mental annoyance. But,
don't let that deter us from again
forming our good resolutions. Make
' them by all means, and having made
them, let's stick to them, and when
1914 comes to ,make its exit our good
resolutions will not' have evolved

The head louse attacks young
chicks generally before they are feath
ered out, and is first found on the
head with its claws or feeders' sunk
into the skin of the head. As they
become more numerous, they attack
the throat and neck as well. The
remedy is simple, but it takes a little
time. Each chick must have Its head
greased with lard, cottonseed oil or
olive oil. You will have to look close
ly to see these insects. They are very
riestructive to chickens and must be
controlled or exterminated if the chi*
is to be healthy.
