Five robberies have occurred
within 20 miles of Columbia in
one week-the week following
the liberation of "'POrtland
Ned," the noted yeggman.
Sever'al nights ago the safe in a
stor'e at Barr's, in Lexington
county, was robbed. Several
nights later three stor'es at
Ceyce were entered, and early,
Sunday morning the post officc

eighteen thousand dollars,
pledged by the United Daugh
ters of the Confederacy in 'con
tract with Sir Moses Ezekiel,
sculptor.
This Monument is to be a
final and lasting tribute to the
whole Confederacy, Army and
Navy; and the committee be
lieves that the men and women
of South Carolina will gladly
join hands with the United
Daughters of the Confederacy
in doing honor to the soldiers
who followed the Stars and
Bars.
