Regret to Learn Of Willingham's Death. People of Anderson generally, and I especially those of the Baptist church es, learned with regret yesterday of | the death in meilland of the Rev. Robert J. Willingham, D. D., general secretary of the foreign mission board of the Southern Baptist convention. Ho preached in Anderson on several occasions and was always heard by tr? mendous audiences. He was recog nized ns one of the greatest mission ary secretaries in the country and as a preached he possessed both charm and great force. Mr. Morrow had thb tsfortune to get lils thumb caught in some part of the ma chinery of the linotype machine, with the result that the member was almost severed from the hand. Thirty-Six Men Wai Take Part in ii. .Much interest is being manifested over thc announcement a few days ago that there would bo a big relay race pulled off in Anderson between six leading mills in and about the city next Friday morning. The teams which will represent the different mills are already practicing in a quiet way and each team is very confident oi winning the honors of the day for the community in which they live, as weil as the $12.00 in cash that will bc presented to thc winning team. It has been announced that the men on each team will be dressed in reg ular track uniform, as near as possi ble and, of course, will make a good showing in the big race Friday morn ing. The race will begin two miles down South Main street, at the crack of a pistol, with six men running , abreast, one man from each of the six teams. As soon as a man covers his. lap, or 1-3 of a mile, he will paso the handkerchief on the next- man belong ing to his team, who will be stationed at the beginning of the next lap. This is kept up with six men running at the -same time until the 36 men will have covered the two miles, each man run ning 1-3 of a mile. .Tue names of the men representing the different teams will be announced later or as soon as preliminary raccB can be pulled off at all the mills in order, to select the best six men to represent each community. All the teams will be in their places' with each man on hiB lap at 11 o'clock Bharp. An automobile for each team will follow Immediately after the run ners to pick up every man as soon as he covers his lap. All men taking part in the race will be carried to the Y. M. C. Gamblers Of Two Hues Were in Courts Yesterday Morn ing. - I Early Sunday morning, shortly after a corps of city policemen had "detain ed" a contingent of well known young white men of the city on charges of infraction of the ordinance prohibit ing indulgence in a fascinating game of chance called playing dice, county officers rounded up a bunch of "prom inent" colored citizens ot the commun ity upon charges of "rolling bones." The former party numbered seven and the latter ft>?e. Members of, the form er party gave bond for their appear-! ance In recorder's court yesterday morning, while the colored "brethren,** not having the wherewithal to gain their liberty, languished in the county jail until their cases were called this morning in the court of Magistrate Broudwell. In recorder's court the young white men. with the exception of one, plead ed guilty to the charges preferred against them. The charges against this one wbo did not enter a plea of guilty were dismissed. The others were fined $25 each, but sentences ot three were suspended. No charges other than those of gambling were preferred against the member of the party who ls said to have stood an of ficer off with a pistol and made his getaway. In the magistrate's court the five "coons" were adjudged guilty ot the charges against them and were sen tenced to pay tines of $20 each or serve 30 days on the chalngsfig. Only one member of the gang waa able to fork over tbs cash, the others golnc to thp rock pile, where they will spend Christmas and greet the New Year with the souad ot picks digging In the cold, cold ground. One member ot the colored party who was found with a pistol in bis pocket, but who did not draw lt on aa officer and get away, was sentenced to serve ah additional 30 days on tho gang.
