a hot summer doy was about the cool

visor's old office and the hallway that
lead to tho east door into quartera
for the clerk of court yesterday began
the work of bricking up thia eastern
opening of the courthouse. It 1B pre
sumed that when the door has been
closed up the steps on that aide of the
court houBe will be removed, as they
will no longer be of service, except as
a loafing place.

theatre waa begun yesterday morning,
and by night practically the entire
opening had been covered- over. The
rear portion ot the theatre stands sev
eral feet higher, than any other por?

essary because the fact that the scen
ery baa to be suspended from that
portion and there most be room fer
lt to be drawn up off, the stage when

according to an opinion given the
Chamber of Commerce by Assistant
Attorney Ceneral Fred H. Dominick.
As generally known, this matter has
been voted on once before, the proposi
tion of annexation being lost by one
vote. To tak<; In the Clemson College
property a Blight extension of the An
derson county lines would be neces
sary. The Anderson county Hue runs
within three miles of the institution at
one point. Three counties, Anderson.
Pickens and Oconee come to a point
within two and a half miles of the col
lege.

Cotton Brought Only
Seren Cents Yesterday.
Cotton was selling yesterday on the
streets of Anderson for only 7 cents,
this being 1-4 less than the staple was
selling for a few days ago. Cotton
buyers reported very little of the
staple offered for sale, and all during
the day not more U??n a half dopen
cotton wagons were noted on the
streets.

Memorial Service
Held Vf Elks.
Memcrlal services for brothers who
hsd patsed away during the last year
were Leid Sunday afternoon in the
courthouse by Anderson lodge No.
1206 B. P. O. Elks. The exercises were
attended fy some 400 or 500 ladies
and gentlemen and practically the en
tire membership of the Elks lodge of
this city. The members bf the order
formed a line at the home ot North
McDuffle street and marched through
the streets to the courthouse. A
beautiful and impressive program was
carried out. A quartette composed of
Mrs. James H. Craig, Miss Fant and
Messrs. T. P. Dickson and Furman
Smith rendered several beautiful se
lections. Mrs. Craig also sang two
solos. After the. opening ceremonies
the invocation waa asked by Dr. R. F.
DI wer. The addre?? of tho day was
made by Gen. M. Ii.1 - lanham, after
which impromptu tributes to the mem
ory of the two brothers whr, had died
during Ute year,' Messrs. C. W. Nor
ryce and T. C. Walton, were made by
Messrs S. M. Wolfe, and T. P.
Dixon. The benediction was pro
nounced by Rev. Dr. W. F. Frazer.

Meets Tonight,
City council meets tonight in reg
ular session at the city hall. Among
the Interest mattera to come up will
be recommendations from the police
committee that the city purchase a
patrol wagon for the hauling of pris
oners to the guard house. The city al
ready has a horse which can be driv
en to the wagon and it can be operat
ed without the addition of extra help,
The committee will also recommend
certain changea in the guard house

tation of tho cells and the moving ol
