STEEL RIBBONS.
. SYNOPSIS-The S of Hearts is the
"death-sign" explored,, by Seneca
Trine In the private war of vengeance
which, through the agency of bis
daughter Judith, a woman of violent
passions Hie his own, he wager;
against Alan Law- son of the man
(now dead) who WBB unintentionally
responsible for the " accident which
rendered Trine a helpless cripple,
Alan is in love with and is in turn
loved by Rope, Judith's twin aud
double, but in all else her opposite.
Judith vows to compass Alan's death,
but under dramatic circumstances he
saves her life and so, unwillingly wins
her love. Thereafter Judith is by turns
actuated by the old hatred, the new
love, and Jealousy of her sister, Ro*r.
.She earns her father'-- distrust aaa ls
left behind by hun when he journeys
West, taking Rose with hun. In order
to turo Alan away from New York.
Alan pursues, Judith accompanying
him against his wish, and succeeds
in' rescuing Rose from Trine's special
train.
I-LIGHT ENGINE -
Toward the close of that summer's
day it was the whim of that .arch
manger ot theatricals -whom men
call fate to stage an anticlimax <n
the midst of a vast arid lilly' expanse
qf desolate middle western country
- a rude and rugged disk of earth
which boasted no human tenancy
within the circle of its far-reaching
horizon and was biceptcd, not neat
* ly, rather irregular, by the flowing
double line of steel ribbons which
marked the ralroad's 'right'. of way
over the old Santa Fe trail.
So much for the stage: thc light
effects were provided exclusively by
the crimson and purple and gold of
a port eat ious sunset; the properties
employed were simply a special train
and what ls known as a light engine.
It was the engineer of the light en
gine who- started the trouble. After
bringing his monster to a full pause,
he turned upon his passengers and
not without plausible excuse- vio
lently indicted Mr. Alan Law _ for
abuse of his and bis fireman's trust

sprain to his sens? of decent pride.
In the service of Miss Trine and her
betrothed, Mr. Law, Barcus had black
ened his face and hands to the hue
of ebony and had garmented him
self in the garb of a pullman porter,
surrendering himself to humiliating
service to those aboard the special,
suffering their insolence, and ocorn
without murmuring, but with tho tid
es of wrath mounting ever, higher
in his bosom.. . /
And now, when et length he had
wott his freedom from that ignomin

sworn at and villlfled. as a common
nigger, by railroad hands!
It waa the fireman (to be just) who
brought the row to a focus by r a
slighting reference to that r"shiftless
and misbegotten dinge."
He repented' quite promptly. Mr.
Barcus Jumped for his throat with
a bellow of rage. The'fireman slip

a vicious awing for his chin; grap

went with him to th? grouno on the

Mr. Barcus heaved a heartfelt sigh,
