Clean City

Anderson Has Leas Trash Now
Tao City of Anderson -is at present
cleaner than lt has been at any .time
tn, recent years, according to a ?tate
rneut made yesterday by Health Of
ficer Campbell. Not only, are private
premises, that is. lots on which there
are dwellings, clean Mit there is a
. noticeable lack of garbage on pre min
es in' tho rear ot 'store's and' .ou?r
business buildings.
Vi',;' i. ," " ?, " , ?' S, I i, , , ,
"There are fewer old tin cans, bot
tles and other junk on residential
Iota at present than I have ever
known," said the health officer,
"while our garbage wagons, do not I
have anything like the ernannt of
sar hage and trash to haul away that [
was once the case."
. The health; officer attributes tho
cleanliness ot private premises to the
fact! that housekeepers generally have
learned the advantages of koplng
their yards free of trash. The lack of
trash about, business premises he at
tributes to the fact that merchants ara
this year finding a use for a great
deal ot trash "which they formerly
threw away, fie states that they are
practicing rigid .economy and using
this, to kindle Arcs and for kindred
purposes.

SPLENDID PIECE OF
COUK?? ROAD WORK!
BEING DONE BETWEEN
NEAL'S CREEK AND CRAY
TONVIULE
CHANGING ROUTE
So As to Avoid F?ll That Has
Been Eyesore for Many
Generations.
"Roads without steep hills, where
rights-of-ways to get around them are
given" Is the slogan being used by
County Supervisor J. Mack King in
carrying forward work on Anderson
County highways. An excellent ex
ample of read construction of this
kind is furnished in a piece of work
which ls being done at present on the
road leading from Neal's Creek to
Crayton ville.
On this stretch of road the con
struction forces are engaged in cut
ting a road around a hill which for
generations, lt ls said, has been a
stumbling block, to speak, in the path
of travelers through that section.
This obstruction to satisfactory trav
elling ls known as the "Lige Holland
hill," and has been described as an
"eyesore," a "drawback" and a "men
ace." The new road which the su
pervisor is cutting around the hill
will afford a grade of less than four
per cent.
The work on this highway, which
is knr.wn ns the old Pendleton road,
is being done by one of the two con
viet gangs. It ls announced that the
highway will soon be completed, when
it IB anticipated that complaints
which have centered about the dis
agreeable hill for year will disappear.
The other'convict gang ls working
on the same road, that is, the old
Pendleton road, In the vicinity of
Pendleton. Borne splendid work is be
ing done on the road leading out from
Pendleton In the direction of the Dix
on place. i
The county now fc??? some 90 con
viet s in its two camps and they are
making an excellent showing. Those
who havo been out on the old Oreen.'
ville road recently dteclaro that lt is
in better condition than they have
seen lt for years. This highway has
recently been worked.
In speaking yesterday of the road
work he ts doing in the County, Su
pervisor King stated that -wherever
there are -bad hills in a road he will
build around them7 provided- land
owner? will give him the necessary
right-of-way to do so. .
