Subject of Eloquent Sermon Deb' D., at First Baptist Church Scores the Evils Infecting t Thc People to Rally to the Clean City. Thc Intelligencer has been furnlsh ed with a synopsis of a' sermon which wsa delivered last Sunduy morning by Rev, John P. Vino?. I)..?., pastor of ?he First Maptlat church of-Ander son. The BUbject of Dr. Vines' ser mon was "Anderson's . Dangerous Way." and in this sermon he scored the ovil? infcHtlrti the city, and elc quently called upon the people of the city to rally to the forces which are lighting for riKlit and for a clean city. Although a hit late The Intelligencer desires to give this brief sutnrcury of the splendid sermon by the able pastor of tills large church. Dr. Vines said In part: A gentleman said to mo a few days ago. "You ministers are watchmen on the walls and it is your duty to see and cry aloud ai il spare not or else you will have tho blood of tho sin ning on your hands." Did he not speak like God wa?, directing his words? In the face of this warning j we. are constrained to ask, "ls the i young man safe, even In Anderson?" Are our boys and girls in daily peril? ? True we have hud a crusade in our city and have succeeded in pulling up and we trust dislodging a few of the most poisonous plants. AH agree that > unless every precaution is taken, it will not be long till the same number of vinera be crawling at. will ou our streets biting and dovouring the Inde cent and unsuspecting. We now face a crisis! Shall we take Immediate steps to make and keep Anderson a safe and clean place or will we con gratulate ourselves on what hats been accomplished and take a rest? God says, "While men slept thc, devil sowed tares." There comes to our minds the scene given to us by the Saviour and described In these words, "A certain man wont down from Je rusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers who both stripped him and beat him, and left him half dead." Te the man on the lookout there ls at our doors today vested crime, rendering the way perilous. Shall good people go or, content to food and clothe and nurso back to lifo the victims of these dens of crime cr shall we do tho bet ter thing, namely, make the road safe from the robber? Dr. F. B. Mcyor said, at ono time he lived on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho and did the best be could to mend the condition? as they wore, taking care of the man who had boen rob bed and Injured on* tho "bloody way." But after awhile he became wearied of this continued hospital service and ..........i .. ~ {_ J?*.i, :*!nm mut thor? kept hammering awny at Calaphus and Pilate to send soldiers to patrol thf way. Dr. Smith commenting on this method remarks. "Quite right! Let tis quit being red crosu nurr.03, doctoring up the sick but go to the root of tho matter." And so say we all, l?t us clean up ,:he dens nt vice .ami crime that Infest our streets, creating poverty, and shame! Let us instead of losing time, weeping at the tender words of crime sympathis ers, be soldiers and crusaders going, out and destroying these wild beasts that fatten and feed upon the weak and the helpless! Anderson has thi* dangerous way and the question is, whether we snail keep lt or blot lt out ana in its stead have a way where good men will walk and work and love and serve? May we this morn ing walk along this dangerous way. and view tor ourselves and then if it is dangerous, take up arms against an invader, who ia here for spoil and without mercy or humanity. (i) No Respecter of Person*. Anderson's langerons way, which ls sin's highway, ls no r'spector of persons. Age nor youth, poverty nor wealth, ignorance nor culture, weak ness nor strength, nothing ls sacrod or respected by this demon ot the way! Some people talk much about being honest aid respectful to evil doers and their methods. You may be' kind and generous and sweet to evil men and their methods yet your charity will but give them the easier ooport unity to destroy you and yours. Samson tried this on Delilah and re pented of bis folly later, You may serve with all your heart and be courteous and honorable, with vice but thia monster, your honor, will take your child and sell him as a slave and hold up a "bloody coat" as your comfort.' The foe! we con front requires all the wl3dom we can possess to destroy. We should give no quarter to men who persist In their work of ruin, the destruction of Virtue and honor, until they a? will ing to repent, quit, and engt .re in something better. Sin Is no respector of persons is Shown ld that oar best homes have not been exempt. Our city attorney, with' a heart of mercy and love, has permitted certain offenders to go free, alnce to convict them.: would require as witnesses the sons of these better homes. These "prominent" young I rifen, 'heaving the honor of their wents, have forgotten tba rs-, sponhiblllty resting upon them, and have gone into dives of -r ime dis gracing all that ls sacred. 1 wonder it these fellows appreciate, the fact, that Mr. Sullivan, a man in nc sense related to them by blood, has shown a care, shielding the honor of their relatives; they have failed to think ott Nojice should be served that' hereafter they do remember! The timo comes when public safety and Justice demand that they who ?iave no respect and love for their own honor, deserve none r?t the hands o(, the law. Tell me a man In broad daylight, can without the semblance of shame, drink and insult public de< ency, because the power of money and pretense is behind him must be allowed to escape on the ground, "He is respectable?" And further an officer who would "brave ly" pounce upon a poor wreck of a man in thc ditch, be he black or white, but becaujc be bas no influ ence, and arrest him, and allow the drunken man who has influence to go wit Inuit molestation, is a coward! | l?et us not be men who a!"e ever leady to jump on the man who ia j down and out and allow tho mighty ! to grt free, even' guilty of the same ; sins ! There is a dangerous way in our city, and no false ideas of respect for certain leaders of crime or cer tain forma of evil will do otherwise but assist our poonle downward! Let us make Anderson the "C'|ty Beauti ful." (2) Evita Along the Way. There are many dangerous evils along Anderson's downward road, but we can but mention a few. Ar -SPbbalh Desecration. God said: "Remember the Sabbath day to keep lt holy. Six days shalt thou labor and dr. all thv work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath unto Jehovah thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, etc." Likewlso we have a State law against this same evil, and also a city law, protecting this holy day. But how in this day set apart for the betterment of the whole man. and protected by law di vino and human, respected? Our mayor* sold when asked about these laws replied: "You may depend upon ! lt that tho laws- th f. are on the books wIB be enforced." Yet we have not neard of God or the State cr city repealing these statutes for tho benefit of a few who desire thin day for traffic and financial gain or for another class, larger, who desire kO . ;"."7".. tu? u?y ii, .-MIii=r> int; tilts spirit of leafing and shame. It Is' a ead day when we decide we know more than God and the State and put our desires for the material things r.t the world and a love for the lower appetites before the highest! Men need not argue that "no Sabbath" is best for the hannines ? and general good of humanltv since God had nt heart the good of his children in all his commands! The only sur? fr.un datlon for permanent and real pros perity for the individual, or the city or nation Is a nroper respect for and a nroper obedience to the law3 of God and man. Along Anderson's dangerous way bl a power poisoning and forever blight ing the character of the young and of some who are not young. I mean bad moving pictures and questionable vaudeville. Pictures composed ot fighting and robbery and displaying false Ideas ot life will often . ripen Into actual crime. And this work, has revealed what we usually And to be true, namely, that about the place of the sale of whiskey there ls a regular den of kindred evils. Profanity, impurity, gambling and drinking, a regular devil's quartette. Anderson has not been an excentlon to this rule. This demon "blind tiger" is of all beasts not i .ad, but even In the dark, hidden behind barred doors be can see how to wreck nomes, and ruin lives. He is willing to feed on the very heart's blood of innocent mothers and wives.
