Mr. Merrick says that at the Octo ber, 1913, term of tho federal court there wore" 101 revenue casca dispos ed of. At the next term of this court, in April,' 1914, the number of revenue cases dropped to 90. At the recent October term, 1914, there were only 59 revenue cases. There were prob ably 75 cases in all at this term, but only 59 revenue cases. And ot this number 35 defendants came forward and entered pleas of guilty; 12 were convicted when placed on trial and the court continued two or three cases. An acquaintance of Mr. Merrick tells a good joke on that officer. It la said that the revenue officer was at one time a United States commis sioner and the deputy brought before him a prominent druggist, charged with selling liquor. The druggist en tered a simple plea of not guilty and said nothing more, whereupon In a very austere and dignified manner the commissioner began the hearing of the case. About three hours were consumed in the trial and when it was finally . concluded the commis sioner turned to the* defendant and in solemn terms said: "Mr. Jones. I am about to bind you over for trial in Federal court on' the charge of ?selling whiskey. Have you anything to ' say?" Whereupon the defendant replied, "Nothing but this." and fish ed out a United States license, per mitting him to handle liquor for the space of one year. The case came to .? TvTy irrupt close.
