COUNCIL DIVIDED ON
PURCHASE OF TRUCK
EVENLY SPLIT ON DEAL SAYS
COUNCILMAN
TRIP CALLED OFF
May Be That After All, Anderson
Will Have No Fire Engine at a
Very Early Date.
No, the members of Anderson's city
council will not lee vc today for Co
lumbus, O., to Inspect automobile fire
fighting* machin-3.
Likewise, council will not journey
to Spartanburg for that purpose.
In fact, council isn't going anywhere
and there ls some considerable doubt
about whether or not a truck ls going
to be purchased right now.
Several weeks "ugo it was rumored
that city council would short!- buy
jan autr.mobllo to be used as a com
bined pu.r.p and truck machine but
the agitation, soon died down and
nothing more wa? heard of the mat
ter ?ntH '?"t Thur?day nlsht From
this part on, this story was told yes
terday to a reporter for The Intelli
gencer by one of the aldermen:
"We bad heard nothing cf a Are en
gine being bought and had never
beard that the city needed, one. We
were dumfounded Thursday night
when one member of council present
ed a recommendation that council at
once place an order with the Amerl
can-LaPrance Motor Car company for
one of their trucks and Instead of
fighting the proposition, we asked for
time to consider it, since we were
taken wholly unawares. When wo go;
time to consider the proposition we'
found that, tba people of Andortsr.a do
not soe any necessity for Investing
$2,500 lc another piece of automobile
apparatus.
"In the first place, since we got the
new water connections, we have suffi
cient pressure to tear clap-boards off
the side of a houso aa it is. We can
easily.throw waten to the top of the
highest building in Anderson and
therefore, where ts the necessity for
buying another machine? Possibly
the city ls going to need another
piece of fire-fighting apparatus In
time and we will all be willing to buy
it when it becomes absolutely neces
sary but at present we do not see
why a heavy debt should be saddled
on the people."
It ls understood that three mem
bers of city council desire to pur
chase the tri'.ck while three others are
opposed to the Idea. It waa said yes
terday by ono ot the aldermen that
Aldermen Spearman. Tate and Carter
desire to purchase the machine and
thai Aldermen Barton, King and Dob
bins refuse to consider the idea.
Mr. Barton, the aenior councilman,
said yesterday that he would like fer
tbs people ot Anderson to thoroughly
understand the entire Idea, what the
plan was and how certain members
of council tried to work. Mr. Barton
said, speaking for himself and the
two gentlemen who stund with him on
the proposition, that he would not
attend any called meeting to consider
tbs matter, and therefore no action
would be possible because ot the lack
of a' quorum, and he and his forces
will fight against buying the truck at
all, whether it be at a called meeting
or in regular session ot council.
It seents to ba the general opinion
that the purchase ot an automobile
fire track will be delayed for a few
weeks.

Taking the view that a really pro
gressive merchant should go after
business all the harder when the cry
of "hard times" and "no money" is
heard, Walter H. Keese & Company,
well known local Jewelers, have just
issued one of the handsomest Jewel
ry catalogues ever seen in Anderson.
The books are printed at considerable
cost and aro gotten up in very tasty
fashion. They are being mailed out
over the county and patrons of this
i/jpular store may obtain one by call

business during the present depres

by going after it.
Interesting Tax
Question Is l p.
A. W. Jones, Comptroller General of
South Carolina, has noticed an inter
.sting phase of the tax situation in
Anderson. Discussing the question
yesterday ono of the court house of
ficials said that the law prescribes
thu*, city taxes shall bo collected ac
cording to thc books in the of flee of
the auditor, but the city has never fol
lowed this pian and has made up lta|
own books. If the ctiy should follow
the books In the office of the auditor,
then city taxes would probably be
paying during some other month of
the year than ls at presr.nt the case.
It ls not known what will be done
about tho matter, if anything.

During the day tho Grand Jury re
turned a number of indictments, the
majority belu?; for offenses of a minor
nature. In the case of Besaio Cleve

shooting and killing Harry Boston,
another negro, no bill was returned.
It was stated in the evidence that the
man was advancing on the woman
with a shot gun when she fired the
fatal shot.
The first case taken up yesterday
was that of Will Garrison, charged
with shooting and killing Will or

ago on People's now iu Ande.-suu. The
jury deliberated for only a short time
and returned a verdict ot not guilty.
Clarence Johnson, charged with as

was tried yesterday afternoon In one
case and a verdict returned of guilty

second case under the same charge
against Johnson. The negio was?

negro women being wounded.
Just before the first day's session

Awaiting Action
With Much Interest
Almost everyone in Anderson coun
ty ls awaiting with decided' interest
the report ot tho special commute of
the grand Jury appointed to investi
gate into conditions on the Savannah
riv.jr as a result of the dam at Port

that the county will leave this matter
to the National government to decide,
while others say that the explanation
wilt be found by the building of a
bridge across the river. If the latter
plan should be Mowed lt is possible
that Hart county, Georgia, would pay
one-third, Anderson county pay one
third, and possibly the power company
would pay the other third. Such a

of $40,000.
