Tote"s ..lore and when the coroner ar
rived he found that Cardozla Jefferson
had ubot and killed Duck ('lenient.
I.nih of thc Participants lind been en
gaged in a "crap" Kaine and the ter
mination 'of thc affair came o/er a
matter of ten cents.
Saturday evening eight negroes be
gan to shoot craps and when midnight
approached thc game was broken vp.
At that time everyone seemed to be
in a pleasant frame of mind, but
when Clemcai ''egan to count his mo
ney, and as that interesting feature of
the occasion wo? receiving his atten
tion, Jefferson spoke up and said.
"Duck, you owe me ten cents of that
money." When Jefferson made this
statement Clement produced his; gun
und placed the weapon and the dime
side by sido on the ground, saying,
"Well, there it ia. you get it." While
Clement's attention was occupied with,
another negro, the testimony showy
that Joffertjfm.suddenly seized the gun
and aa Ciemmt began to run, Jeffer
sin fired.
At that tune all the negroes beat a
hasty retreat from the scene of the
row and it wes not known that Clem
ent had been fatally injured, but. on
Sunday morning he waa found on a
log in some bushes about 25 yarda
from where-the shooting occured and
it wak then ascertained that death
must have been almost instantaneous.
The coronerV Jury held Jefferson re
sponsible for the killing and he was
arrested by Sheriff Ashley and waa
brought to Anderson and is now in
the county tail .
