A BAD RUNAWAY
ON MAIN STREET!
Three Teams Became Mixed Up j
and Considerable Damage Was
the Result
One of the worst runaway affairs
that Anderson has witnessed in some
time took place yesterday afternoon
at 6 o'clock when a team belonging to
tho Andertion Mattress fuctory bo
camo frightened near tito postoilicc
and ran away. Tho two hornes,
hitched to a wagon, came down Main
street at s terrille clip and struck a
horso belonging to Mrs. Hleckloy.
Thc animal's hip war badly cut and
torn and thc horse wns bruised In sev
eral other places. After striking this
team, tho (wo frrlght.crnzc? horses
continued to run and when opposite
Tho Intelligencer oillcc struck u hack
driven by W. A. McSwaln. The car
riage was almost demolished and was
knockod over, Mr. McSwaln heine
hurled undor the dobrls. Even this
did not serve to stop tho two horses
and they continued to run until they
'reached tho corner Just past tho post
ofhec, where they collided with a Ford
automobllo and they wiro then
hrought to a stop.
. Mr. McSwaln, who was buried un
dor his hack, received, a severo bruise
on the back of his head, but lt I? not
beliovod that his injury will prove to
bo serious. Tho horso which was hurt
by tho runaway team was carried to
Davis Brothers' stables whore Dr. J.
C. Mitchell went to work on it and lc
ls believed that the animal will re

Also Figuring On
Georgia Election
Not content with speculating ovei
the election which is to be held h
this state within less than one week
Anderson county voters are much ox
ercised over the election which will
take place In Georgia today. Then
are numerous supporters of variom
candidatos for all Georgia officcB. no*
living In Anderson, and they are anx
iouBly awaiting the outcome of tc
day's election. The raco for governo
and that for thc United States senat

Ringling Br?then

Non Located

Aftermath Of

Tho only topic of general discus
sion on tho streets of the city yester

Ono Northern man who had never
seen a political mooting in tho South,
mado voluntary notes, which he says
be will read before his fellow club
members when ho gats back home. It
i developed yesterday that a plan had
been formed to howl down some of the
speakers for tho higher offices but this
failed to develop.

Growing Melons
FurnInhes Livelihood.
Arthur Hawkins, a negro farmer,
living a few miles from Anderson,
waa in tho city yesterday and disposed
pf a load Of fine watermelons in shot
order. Hawkins says that he has sold
over 1,200 melons In Anderson this
seaon. Beckoning that ho received nt
least 25 cents for each molon, which
he bas dono, the negro has realised
$300 this season from watermelons
alone. This also shows that a living
can be made in Anderson county with
out raising cotton.

City Trill Have.
A Building Code, i.
Following the lead of other pro.
;ressivc cities in South Carolina, An.
deraon is to have a building inspector!
under the new city administration.
This office will bo created, primarily
for the purpose of i letting tho city
participate In the State fireman's fund
which will bring Into the city treasury
each year about $550.- It, is presumed
that Anderson will have a building
and electrical Inspector to look after
every building in the city from this
time on, and rumor has lt that these
duties will be delegated to the pres
ent city engineer, In addition to his j
present work.
[ Negro Caused
All the Trouble.
Irvine Payne, a negro employed as a
driver by the Anderson Mattress Com
pany was arrested last night by Of
ficer Sanders This negro ls indirect
ly responsible for the trouble occas
ioned yesterday afternoon when a
team belonging to the mattress fac
tory ran away. The boy' went into
tbe express of fie and left his team '.
j standing, unhlf ied in front of that
place, and a pr .sing automobile caus
I ed them to take fright. The city or
dinances say that no driver shall leave
a team unhitched on the main street

that he driver was arrested. He will

added. This was not intended to be
used in this manner and makes 1
