Two From Hone? Path Will Get
Free Courses at Clemson Dur
ing Coming Term
There was no four-year scholarship
in Clemson College from Anderson
county this year and accordingly -tn
tho list of winners as announced from
.Clemson yesterday, the namo of An
derson county is omitted. However,
there aro 18 of the one-year scholar
ships vacant in tho state and Ander
son county had a chance at these. An
examination was held in this city on
July 10th for tho one-year scholarship
and a number of young men appeared
and stood for this.

M. Cannon of Honea Path proved to
be the .mccessful contestant and he
willTfpit the one-year scholarship, but
it was-also decided that out of tho
18 vacancies, niuo of these would bo

New York Men Were So Pleased
With Washington Address They
Invited Anderson Man
So well pleased were the building
and loan men of Now York with the
address which. Capt. G. Cullen Sul
livan of Anderson delivered in Wash
ington, they Invited thc Anderson man
to deliver the samo address before tho
New York State Association and Capt,
Sullivan accepted the invitation.
The annual meeting of the United
States league was held in Washington)
on July 27. 28 and 29 and Capt. Sulli
van's address on "Sentiment-Not To
-Be Overlooked in the Conduct of Our
Institutions." was easily thc feature of
the meeting. Capt. Sullivan first de
livered this address before the South
Carolina Building and Loan Associa
tion and thlB prompted thc invitation
to address the national association.
It is said that his. address was easily
thc feature of the Washington meet
ing.
Mr. William Goldsmith, who attend
ed the meeting, Btates that the B. &
L. as an Institution is gaining prestige
and usefulness all over the United
States. Thcro were 110 delegates in at
tendance. South Carolina had twelve
representative^. . Mr. Goldsmith, in
speaking ot the gathering, aaid it was
far more enjoyable dud helpful than
he can express.. The dqlgates were ac
corded a royal time in the national
capital, and the geoerol spirit of the
gathering waa such as to show the
growing Importance of the B. & L.
and tho,enthusiasm with which these
institutions' are working.

County" Entertained Great
Number- Delightful Affair
People living at Pendleton had. a
big time yesterday and at the same
time they gave over 400 visitors one, ot
tho most delightful times that any of
them had ever experienced. The af
fair was in the nature of a picnic,
staged for the benefit of the Anderson
county candidates, the candidates for
congress from the Third district and
thc voters of all that section.
Early in the morning it became evi
dent that the attendance would,' be
large and when 10 o'clock came and
the time for the opening of the meet
ing arrived, over 400 voters were in
attendance. Al speaker's stand bad
been erected just in front of the old
Farmers' Hnll and here the meeting |
wns called to order, theRev.' Mr. Bal
ienger acting as chairman. He intro
duced tho candidates for the state
senate as tho first speakers and these
gentlemen were followed by the candi
dates for the house.of representatives.
Candidates for probate judge spoke
next and then an' adjournment! was
had for dinner. At this time the
chairman presented'each of the 47
candidates with an artistic little blue
ribbon badge, bearing the words,
"Pendleton-The Flower Carden Of
Anderson county." The dinner served
by the ladles, of Pendleton simply beg
gars description. It was ono of the
most delightful meals Imaginable and
under the shade of the spreading trees
the different dainties and delicacies'
tasted better than they would have
done- anywhere else. Candidates and
their friendd and the people of Pen
dleton did fulU justice to the magnifi
cent r prend and then the speaking
vies resumed. Rev. Mr. Ballenger bad

presided over tho remainder of tho
meeting. The candidates spoke In the
following order during the afternoon:
