T? RB Information of Care This is the most complote list of the governors of South Carolina ever pub lished, and is the first lint ever pub lished, so far aa I know, of thc lieu tenant governors. It ia furthermore distinctive in that I do not ask any one to toke lt on full h. the citation of the authority for every ?talement ia explicity given. For this reason I hope it may be of value to historical 'students. The list taken from Mc Crady's history is substantially cor rect though there are some minor in accuracies, as lie himself indicates at another place. Lack of time prevented my going to tho sourceB for these 2", governors, but, for the convenience of readers. I insert them. In saying a governor before the civil War was elected (on December 10, e. g.,) I name the day on which he was declared elected, though occasionally tbs voting may have been a day or so previous, President, Vice President, Governors, "Lieutenant Governors, Deputy Gov ernors and Acting Governors of South Carolina from i G 4 io 1899. The governor was addressed as "His Excellency, the lieu, tenant governor as "His Honor." The lieutenant governor did not succeed to the title of governor on the death of the governor, nor was there any connection or. association between their terms of office. Both held during royal pleasure, and there might be a number of governors to one lieu tenant governor, as Indeed was the case. Tlie pay of both was the same. The lieutenant governor received nothing during the service of the gov ernor. Note 2.-Thia Lieut. Gov. William Bull was the son of the lieutenant governor of the same name mentioned above as No 29. That official was in those dey s such an unimport ant part of the government that quite I frequently thr< journals of the houses ? electing bim ?imply state that an elec tion for lieutenant governor was held, and contain no .urii..*"- reference to the man or the subject- lucre is no guarantee .that if the missing house journal could be found we should learn who was lieutenant governor, though it is rather probable.
